An editor goes to jail? Does anyone care?
NEWSWATCH: While journalists froth with outrage in the mainstream media and on social media channels over the impending Sunday Times arrests, there is a worrying noticeable lack of general public support. Many people seem to see this as a clear-cut case of theft of someone's medical records and feel the media should be prosecuted for that. It is concerning that the public do not see the bigger picture of media harassment, the public interest debate or how extraordinarily heavy-handed the State is being on the editors involved. One of the most balanced reports on the whole saga is from journalism professor Anton Harber, himself a veteran of state harassment of the media under apartheid: An editor goes to jail? Does anyone care?
