Should Jon Qwelane be fired for his latest column?
Jon Qwelane may follow the path of controversial columnists Deon Maas and David Bullard if the gay community and other concerned members of society have their way. Alleged homophobic writer Qwelane outraged the gay and lesbian community with his Sunday Sun column on Sunday, 20 July 2008, which was not published on News24.com as per usual every Monday.
In a column headlined “Call me names but gay is NOT okay...”, he compares homosexuality with bestiality. The column may be viewed at online gay publication www.mambaonline.com, which has lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), the press ombudsman and Media24. Blue Planet Media has also stated its full support and joins the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community of South Africa in condemning the article as hate speech and also urges the press ombudsman, the SAHRC and the Sunday Sun editor to take action.
