While most of the unbelievable quantity of advertising for cell phone downloads is just plain irritating, some of it is blatantly offensive.
The TV ads for Glomobi, and an endless list of other download suppliers, are, on the surface, just plain irritating crap. But when you consider what they charge, the subject matter, and the fact that most of it is aimed at kids, you should begin to think twice about letting your kids have cell phones which can download this stuff. The two specific downloads which caught my attention were one which featured Jacob Zuma singing his stupid and outdated song, and the other which featured a graphic of a faceless figure carrying two large guns in hands crossed over its chest. I'm no prude, but when you consider the problems we have in good old SA, I think encouraging kids to spend money on this shit is, at best, stupid, and, at worst, unconstitutional. We are, in effect, telling them that this is fine, and worth spending good money on. No wonder we're developing a generation very short on moral values and good sense. What kind of leaders are they going to make?
