This course is designed to provide students with the foundation theory and basic skills and know-how of sound engineering, including how to set up and record in a studio etc.
Also mix audio, use effects and processors, and do basic post-production in ProTools.
Lectures are presented in a ProTools Sound Lab equipped with Mac workstations, each with a ProTools soundcard.
Students will have projects to complete during this six-week course and their work will be assessed.
Course outline • Theory of sound and acoustics • Microphones • Studio layout, signal flow and mixing desks. • Basic recording techniques • Dynamic signal processors (EQ, compression, gating & limiting) • Effects signal processors (reverb, delay etc) • Basic mixing techniques • Basic post-production in ProTools
Admission requirements • Matric; or Grade 10, with basic computer skills.
Job opportunities Successful graduates might well be able to setup their own home studio, or work as an entry-level assistant engineer at a commercial studio, or in a radio or television station. They could record demo albums, record and produce their own work, or work as an engineer for a company that does live sound.
