This is an intensive, hands-on workshop where the photographers will create, shoot and edit their own photo story and meet with and discuss the work of award-winning photojournalists.
This course is designed for working and student photojournalists.
Creating a photo story challenges a photojournalist to look harder and think more deeply about the people and places they are photographing. Photo stories also refine research, reporting and editing skills. Single images can become more thoughtful and complete as a result of shooting photo stories. Finally, a photographer's marketability will be improved if he or she can shoot a good photo story because there is heavy influence placed on photo stories and projects in competitions, grants, and agencies.
In this full-time 5-day course, participants will: a. Analyse the photo stories of South African and international photographers b. Meet with and view the work of top South African photojournalists c. Research and write a proposal for a photo story to be shot in the Johannesburg metro area d. Share skills and ideas with other participants e. Spend three afternoons shooting a story f. Edit and analyze each shooting session, work on suggestions for further shoots g. Sequence photos for a final edited package
Each photographer will be required to have photographic equipment – digital or film. At the end of the course participants exhibit their week's work for invited guests and local professionals.
