Participants in this three-day course will develop strategies for reporting on a field characterised by conflicting claims from communities, activists, industry, and government officials.
What is greenwash? What is environmental justice? Environmental reporting needs to respond to paradigm shifts in public opinion. Globally, the public imagination is moving beyond national views to that of a single planet – increasingly strained to provide resources for modern industry, and absorb its wastes. In South Africa, the shift from a conservation focus to environmental justice mirrors a post-apartheid agenda and the demands of globalisation. In the process a new and exciting – but highly contested – field of reporting has opened up. Course participants will explore these shifts in focus areas of climate change, energy, pollution, conservation and tourism and genetic engineering of foods, and develop strategies for reporting on a field characterised by conflicting claims from communities, activists, industry, and government officials.
