Advanced photojournalism

This course is designed for senior photographers, chief photographers, and picture editors to reflect on the state of photojournalism and reportage etc.

Topics will include: an assessment of the role of photography since the advent of democracy, the social landscape of photography, how digital photography and related technology has affected the way we make and disseminate photographs, what are we saying? the voice of the photojournalist, mentoring for diversity, related case studies from photo departments, readers and visual literacy, what has winning World Press awards amongst others meant to South African photography, photo editing, enhancing the importance of captions, photo agencies and their role in reportage on the African continent, are ethical considerations and guiding principles being challenged in photographing the Aids pandemic?

The course will attempt to assist those in positions of influence in photographic departments to more effectively manage processes to enhance effective photo reporting. Participants are required to present relevant case studies that demonstrate changed dynamics in photo departments, examples of best practice and challenges. These will need to be submitted one week before the course begins.
