The South African political landscape has changed quite dramatically over the past few decades, an epoch aptly defined as the pre- and post-1994 era.
No doubt, politics has remained the number one topic occupying the centre stage of the national discourse and debate. However, the South African story, couched in highly-charged debates around politics, remains as elusive as ever, like a mirage to those trying to reach an understanding of its dynamism. How do we as journalists help South Africans and indeed outsiders understand South African politics - the country's number one topic? Do we as journalists adequately and credibly tell the South African story? Are we merely acting as conveyor belts of information, or are we adequately capturing what is otherwise the unfolding of important developments in our nation's history? Political reporting will help participants to:
• Understand the profundity of the South African political landscape - the undercurrents and political dynamics; • Report the South African Parliament and extra-parliamentary politics; • Understand international politics - South African foreign policy and the role of South Africa in international bodies such as the United Nations and the African Union.
This intensive, three-day, full-time workshop aims to equip political journalists at mid-career level and above to meet the challenges outlined above. By the end of the course, participants will have completed discussions and practical exercises on the following: • Identify political issues and report on these developments as they unfold • Generate original political stories and write authoritatively on these developments • Confidently conduct political interviews with senior political players across the political spectrum • Maintain professional standards and editorial ethics in Political Reporting
