Basic reporting and writing for print

Basic reporting is a foundation course enabling participants to gather information from a range of sources while writing for print enables participants to turn the information into journalistic reports.

Basic reporting is a foundation course that enables participants to gather information from a range of sources for journalistic purposes. Participants will revisit crucial steps of gathering facts, sourcing information and positioning stories.

Writing for print will enable participants to turn the information they have into journalistic reports for the print media. The course aims to build sound writing practices for an increasingly competitive market.

1. Basic reporting (two days)
Basic reporting is a foundation course that enables participants to gather information from a range of sources for journalistic purposes. Participants will revisit crucial steps of gathering facts, sourcing information and positioning stories.

2. Writing for print (three days)
Will enable participants to turn the information they have into journalistic reports for the print media. The course aims to build sound writing practices for an increasingly competitive market.

Course outcomes – by course end you'll be able to:
• Understand the definition of news, news values, news priorities and story selection
• Understand the role and responsibility of a reporter inside and outside a newsroom
• Initiate story ideas
• Learn effective ways to identify and gather the information needed for a story
• Set-up and conduct an interview
• Determine your target audience
• Polish writing skills
• Use quotes effectively
• Solve editorial problems
