This two-day course will focus and examine relevant legal aspects concerning media law and court reporting in South Africa including defamation and statutory restrictions.
The course will cover an introduction to the South African legal system (including sources of South African law, the role of the courts, and the differences between common law and statutory law, as well as civil and criminal procedure). The course will then examine various aspects of media law that apply to court reporting, in particular the qualified privilege defence and other defences in the law of defamation, the contempt of court rules that apply to court reporting, and statutory restrictions on reporting. Practical exercises and examples will be used to illustrate how these rules apply in practice.
