This five-month correspondence course offers training by well-known journalists, and teaches you everything you need to know about writing and selling articles to magazines.

Students must complete:


-10 writing exercises (10 for assessment and feedback)
-one quiz on magazine industry protocol
-one query letter
-one full-length magazine article of publishable quality

Admission requirements:

-Basic writing skills are essential
-Computer skills, email and internet access required
-No previous tertiary qualification required

Tutors:

Karin Schimke was a political writer for The Star and The Cape Times before turning to freelancing in 2000. She writes for a variety of newspapers and magazines, and recently released a book called "Fabulously 40 and Beyond", co-written with Margie Orford. She also writes short stories and poetry.

Leoni Benghiat majored in communications and English literature and has been a freelance non-fiction writer, journalist and photojournalist since 1994. She has a solid international client base of more than 60 magazines and newspapers, including Reader's Digest, Marie Claire, Men's Health, De Kat and Insig, and Beeld, Saturday Star, and Sunday Times.

Prior to freelancing, she was a newspaper journalist and deputy news editor with a national daily, magazine writer for a weekly family magazine and editor of two international trade magazines.

Lisa Lazarus is a freelance journalist for a variety of publications, including Men's Health, Shape, Cosmopolitan, Femina, Healthy Pregnancy and the Mail & Guardian.

Previously she worked as principal of CityVarsity for six years. She has a Masters degree in educational psychology, and currently also works as strategic business planner at Boston House College.
