Comments on Is MNET Almighty?

mnet was right  by  Ruth
we live with violence every day, the tsunami is currently a sensitive topic and so they were right to cancel the broadcast

oversensitive
Maybe they should cancel movies with rain because of floodings... Maybe they should cancel movies with ships because of the Titanic... Get over it! Stop being so sensitive. People can't even remember the Tsunami reference in the flick. I mean really...

Agree... to an extend  by  Savannah
I wouldn't have scheduled Bruce Almighty for a Sunday evening's viewing due to the religious sensitivity around this movie... I could't even remember the reference to the Tsunami and therefore believe it was not very evident in the movie. However, Hunted was certainly not a better option.... rather violent for a 8pm movie! In general, I think all stations should be careful about what they show early in the evenings... young children are watching TV all the time and are exposed to violence, sex and nudity from as early as 7pm on some shows... I know there is parental guidance etc, but it is sometimes difficult to enforce since working mothers are busy with getting supper ready, bathing younger children, homework etc at the times when some of the shows are on...

Kids....  by  Misty
As far as kids being exposed to violence, etc on TV.... just turn the damn thing off then they won't be exposed to it. Parents need to lay down firmer ground rules for their kids and in this way they can determine what the kids and and can't watch until a suitable age. Since when do kids dictate to elders?!

Easier said than done..!  by  Savannah
Oh and I assume you have a handful of children, Misty! Its easy to say switch the damn thing off, but in reality you sometimes need the older children out of hair while dealing with the babie(s) -- in my case, 8-month old twins and older brother of 5... Yes, its not the right or perfect parent way of doing, but after a long day at the office (some of us aren't fortunate enough to get maternity leave / have help around the house!) you just cant handle all the pressure. I am a single parent and battling to juggle a busy career and order in the household... I have now resorted to videos/DVD's for my older son -- that way I at least choose what he watches... (but it still doesn't stop him from switching channels -- these days a 2-year old knows how a remote works).

Absolutely right - right is might!  by  Sanitisation Rules OK

That blasphemous movie Bruce Almighty might upset people like Janet Jackson's disgusting display of you-know-what. Mentioning the tsunami will also upset people like that terrible display of nudity for the opening of the Olympics. I'm very glad some people in America are sueing over that - it was shocking.

But we all know some violence is okay, because we need weapons and combat training to deal with all the terrorists who are going to plunge the world into chaos from which only the righteous and strong will emerge - then the world will be cleansed and purged and no-one will be upset anymore because everyone will agree - hallelluyah!

Janet  by  BBJ
It was during last year's Superbowl, not the Olympic games that janet Jackson had a "costume failure".

You are right  by  Sanitisation Rules OK

Of course that happened at the Superbowl, with millions of families watching! Everyone knows that.

The Opening Ceremony at the Olympics is an entirely different matter and a different lawsuit. Didn't you know? Those liberal Europeans flaunted their bodies in scantily-clad outfits for all to see.

American broadcasters must be punished for screening such an offensive ceremony and that's why concerned citizens are suing them.

It's an uplifting example of how offensive things can be stopped if we're brave enough to go to court.

huh?  by  S
Jeez, sanitation rules!!! I thought people like you only existed in slapstick comedies. Why don't you find yourself a deserted island somewhere for you and your Puritan, close-minded friends. If you feel the show is offensive, don't watch it. It is afteral a free country, whether you like it or not

Absolutely Bull...  by  Mr... Angry
There's one thing I hate the most is South Africans who moan and groan all day. Wake up, this is a the New world, let alone south Africa.. some of us pay for the DSTV service from our hard earned cash.. If you don't like what's on the Channel. Please switch off the bloody TV or watch SABC or Cartoon Network... I pay DSTV to watch what I want, not of what certain members of the group, church, political association say.

Basically I'm just Gatvol of South Africans who know nothing more than to complain about petty little things, they don't know what pain and suffering is? I have watched the movie plenty of time and was looking forward to seeing it again.. The tsunami excuse was just bull according to me, Mnet was trying to win public votes or sympathy, for what, they know? I think it was some cheap marketing or Pr ploy from their side...

How many images have been show from Carte Blanche about the Genocide from Burundi and that other program where most of the population had their arms and limbs chopped off.. who cried fowl? No one said any damn thing.. I grew up in front of pain and ugliest part of South Africa and yet, some times we get to view these "archives' now and again and yet Mnet doesn't say anything to express sympathy.

So all those who complain about the movie, I say shame on you

VIVA freedom of choice VIVA!!!!
If MNet really cared it would take more care about screening a whole lot more movies e.g. Bruce Almighty (too blasphemous?) or Fallen (too violent?). Some movies are so bad they shouldn't make it to a screening. Screen what you want to, the viewer is intelligent enough to make the final choice. VIVA freedom of choice VIVA.

Give me a break!  by  Kenta
Sanctimonious idiots are the only people who would defend the cancellation of the screening. Come on!! We see sex, violence, degraded morality daily, and now we want to take a Jim Carrey movie seriously? Please!! I am always astonished by those who go on about the sensitivity of the tsunami (boo hoo) and then will laugh at a joke about Ethiopian families resembling a barcode. Get a life.

Give me break: SPOT ON  by  Mr Angry
I agree with you 200%... these are the people who watch FTV and jerf off.. I've heard stories of guys actually jerking off while watching FTV... then they have the moral of saying they are the righteous.. The tsunami affected other parts of Africa... or that doesn't mean anything too them. Boo Hoo I say to

What is wrong!  by  Nathan10
What is wrong with you people? Ruth - what about violence? You say we live with violance everyday, shouldn't we therefor stop all violent shows. Violent crimes are committed everyday and violent shows should therefor (according to you) be cancelled. Sanitisation Rules OK - firstly i thought you were joking. What violence is okay??? You mean killing Iraqis!! That's okay because it isn't here. Or what do you mean? And Scantily Clad Europeans - yes they disgust me too. You must hate the ballet, any swimming events and gymnastics. All those scantily clad individuals! Oh and for the record, MOST of those concered parents suing broadcasters, aren't doing it for there little children, they want the cash. Viva Freedom - Viva!! Thank you for thinking for yourself.

You're right - I was joking Nathan  by  Sanitisation Doesn't Rule OK

I was trying to make a point, albeit a sarcastic one, that it's all a slippery slope to censorship and the world is becoming worryingly paranoid and right-wing.

I was also trying to get intelligent, open-minded people such as yourself to comment on the ridiculous actions of MNet and the just as ridiculous postings by Ruth and Savannah.

Viva freedom of speech and expression!

Hunted to me was like watching Iraq happen all over again  by  Lusiwe
I also thought the whole "sensitivity" thing was laughable especially since reference to tsunami was minimal. I rather found Hunted very violent and what happen to the other groups who were affected by Iraq or Bosnia. Why the double standards?

Mnet, check yourself before you wreck your self

bollocks!
i also phoned in to complain! i am so sick of the old broeders at mnet trying to act like parents. we are adults! its OK to show violence and propagandistic US war films ??!!

Where do we draw the line?  by  Carin
If MNET was right in canceling Bruce Almighty - which I enjoyed when I rented it - where do we draw the line with regards to sensitivity? The tsunami was a terrible occurence wrecking millions of lives, I do not disagree with that. However, should such incidinces dictate what we can and cannot watch? I find Heinz Winckler's newest song more "offensive" - bearing in mind when it was released - than a once-off background reference to an event in a movie that targets other issues.

WAKEY, WAKEY!!  by  yabbat

If someone is still in mourning over the loss of a loved one in the tsunami, it is highly unlikely that they'd be watching blerrie TV in the first place!

(and ALL Heinz's stuff is offensive... surprised anyone only noticed it now.)
