daily sun is not for sensitive and faint[- hearted readers  by  sasa
The best thing is just not to read Daily Sun if you are scared by the pictures on its pages.

I completely agree......  by  Com
with you. The paper is pathetic and an absolute pain. Yes we have horrible things happening in our society but do we have to be bombarded with them everymorning?

You can choose not to read the paper but you can't ignore the horrible pics they have on the front page. Whether you like it or not you are going to see those pictures which are on your face.

Unfortunately we have people who read it. People who get a kick out of reading it and then they go around showing it advertising it. It's really a shame.

Quality doesn't come cheap  by  Lebo
I can bet my favourite piece of writing that most of the people who complain about Daily Sun are either intellectuals/ academics or the light-hearted. But I'd like to think that they are not among the paper's targets. I agree, the pictures are gruesome and definitely uncalled for. But hey, its a cheap paper and its target market obviously adores it (for such content and pics).
I don't read it myself, but clearly, its here to stay. So if you don't like it, you have no choice but to....
Live with it!

Oh and by the way, it doesn't have a shelf life span cause it just doesn't stay there (its a daily best seller, l think - or something along those lines).

Sucks! Doesn't it?

Re: Front pg pic  by  chris
Whilst I certainly agree editors should adopt a sensitive and thoughtful approach to news placement, especially when it comes to photographs, at least this paper is prepared to highlight injustices and not cower away from its responsibility as a watchdog for society - the media, on the whole, is toothless in this country.

SUN, WAKE UP, IT IS A SUNNY DAY WE ALL NEED TO SEE POSITIVE THINGS  by  Wil
I always say to my friends, if you want to be misserable for the whole day read Sun news paper. Or if you want to be negative in life and have fear of witchcraft or hate, read sun.

Sun! make our day, we want to read about things that will build us, that will build our children's future, not about this horrific pictures and stories that you are always after.

We know bad things happen in our country, but what picture are you potraying to the out-site world about South Africa? That our country still believes in Voodoos, killings and terrible pictures that you are showing to the world?

Wake up Sun, you have choosen such a nice name, be the light to the people not the darkness.

The Daily Sun is a disgrace to the intellect of those who read it!  by  Robinho
Hi people

South Africa has a problem with literacy and numeracy, please see the latest rankings of how are doing on Math and Science globally - out of an odd 50 countries we rank in the late 40's.

Everyone knows whay that is the case.....the daily sun (I guesse has spotted that and decided to service these unfortunate individuals, and there are millions of them and they happen to be largely black (I am aslo black)

I do not like the daily sun myself....but in a free economy, you can't tell them not to publish, no -one can!

As i said it is an insult to black people including me... I can choose not to read / buy it ( that is easy to do), however it does not put paid to the fact that I feel INSULTED by the daily sun.

What I CAN DO though is educate myself (always), encourage my fellow black person to both read / write & count so he / she is enlightened, with better literacy and numeracy levels, there WILL NOT be a NEED for publications like the Daily Sun or such publications will change content and adapt to the NEEDS of the new market.

That unfortunately will take time, I mean a real long time.....IF BLACK people have no respect for their INTELECTUAL DEVELOPMENT, the Daily Sun's of this world will FOREVER Thrive.....and there is not much you can do about them.....economics calls it demand and supply.

At the moment, all those guys who either do not make it through high school or varsity (any tertiary) or IF they do BUT DO NOT THINK READING (so you are a better person) is MOST IMPORTANT, the daily sun has an unlimited market.

Frm Pres, Rholihlahla Nelson Mandela, once drew a parallel between what is happening in the Great Lakes (Burundi, Hutu killing Tutsi as a RESULT of a PEOPLE NOT EDUCATED. There has been atleast 2 or 3 Genocide occurances in that country, beside the recent one of the 90's, another one took place in the 40's) ....HE is 100% correct, lack of education is a DISEASE, just like the scourge of HIV / AIDS....(this is cruel, but this disease thrives on IGNORANCE and lack of EDUCATION - HUNGER - POVERTY, etc just like the Daily Sun does on the intellectual front.

One last thing, reading the Business Day, Financial MAil, Star, Citizen, etc is NOT being intelectual, that reasoning is a reflection on an absence of a CULTURE OF REDING that somehow makes one feel ASHAMED to do so ....it simply can be likened trying to FEED your BRAIN with good food, as much as your doctor will tell you not to eat junk food cause it is not healthy, OR as common sense tells you that ...when you go to re-fuell your car, don't drink the petrol, cause it is not good for you.....

Sorry, it s a long email.......and if u r blck and u read this far, thank you and well done....it is a first step towards self love, appreciations, freeing yourself from bondage!

this is the only way we can learn
I believe this is indeed a reflection of the society we live in. It is not some horror movie and what it actually teaches us is that there are a lot of wrong things out there. by seeing it we are some how appauled and we learn to be tolarent. It opens a debate on domestic abuse and other forms of abuse , it puts shame on the pepetrators and maybe if you are among the abusive once you will refrain from this sort of revenge. big up daily sun.

Sun tells the challenging story  by  Lazman
While some of their pictures are gloomy it remains a fact that it is reality. We cannot shy away from that by being glossy as most of our not so "pathetic" papers are. Who are we to dictate to the paper against its market? Why do we want to pretend that all is hunky dorry? Would we rather have pics of some so-called celeb and a not that clever gossip story? No! let's face it, maybe it will get us to act. I see these as a challenge to marketers who should sway Sun's market from their unrealistic beliefs and perception that lead them to such horrendous acts. Can you rise to the challenge and sell a better view of things than is the case?

have a heart  by  Angel
The inbuilt design of human beings when faced with something traumatic is a shut down process - this has a numbing effect on the emotions. Beginning a downward spiral means the next time you need to make connection with an emotion to respond to a shock - you are either too afraid to respond correctly (align with a victim mode) or so aggressive you over react (align with the perpetrator). I think the press has a huge part to play in the desensitising of our society. Pictures that evoke such strong emotions should not be allowed to be made public. For all you decision makers on the content of your media, open a trauma ward for your readers - I wish someone would sue the offenders.

What would life be?  by  Spoonfeeder
I'm not knocking the fact that the paper published this story, however, why is it only bad news that intrigues us all so much?

Why is it that only the most exciting movies are the ones with an age restriction, with sex and violence as the main contributing factors.

Don't you think it has something to do with feeding a hunger that we all have? I'm only giving my opinion, but maybe there is a direct connection to our sub-conscious that makes us take this sort of crap in. It allows us to realise how fragile we are as mortals, therefore making us aware not to take thing for granted.

But there's a back lash to this, the rubbish in is negative and has a direct influence on our behaviour, therefore making us negative and unappreciative.

It's perpetual.

Try this. Don't pick up a newspaper or watch the news on t.v. or negative movies for a week and just see the difference it makes.

Distasteful  by  Smooth
If selling newspapers means this, then what kind of nation are we building. The people who make decisions on the content of this paper, what goes through their minds. This kind of reporting lives a bad taste in one's mouth. Deviating a bit from this story, there is only one paper with distasteful, silly, disgusting headlines and that is none other than Daily Sun. Remember when YFM DJ Khabzela passed away, the headline read "Aids DJ dies". When Mandela's son passed away, the headline read "Mandela mourns Aids son". What do you make of this?

Readers love Daily Sun   by  sasa
I have noticed on couple of occassions on the side of the road in the morning, pedestrians seriously reading Daily Sun while walking, and i said to myself, maybe the newspaper is giving the readers the content they want, including the pictures. On the flipside though, my PA has stopped buying the paper because of the horrific pictures, hence i say the paper is not for the faint-hearted.

But do you think it is making a positive contribution to what SA needs to be competitive?????

People Magazine  by  BrattStar
I equate this newspaper to an even worse form of people magazine, but on a daily availability. It is filled with negative, real life trash. Sensationalism and negativity are its key motives. It lives on the fears and darkens in the hearts of its readers. It makes a mockery of what this "new" SA is trying to achieve, breeding negativity doesn’t make us a better country. Acting like the disgusting US society doesn’t make us a first world country either. Try being a positive paper with a positive message, sure you wont have as many idiot reading your paper, ala people magazine readers, but you will earn the publics respect in knowing you are delivering news that is relevant and not just putting ink to paper to make as much money off the fear of an emerging nation. Get a real piece of news to the people not trash, please...if not for your own good for the sake of children you are influencing.

Sasa please stop being naive. Forget about buying the paper ,when you are driving and the guys selling news papers are blatantly showing this article. You can just cause an accident. The picture should have been minimised/out of focus for the Daily Sun readers.

Even nurses cannot stomach seeing what they see on a daily base, some of them leave because of that.

Please be very careful of what you reply to. People are raising a very important point.

Which newspapers should Daily Sun readers read  by  sasa
Even though i support people not reading Daily Sun, given the demographic profile of Daily Sun readers and their news tastes, i don't think they would want to read Sowetan, Citizen,Natal Witness,Business Day etc, the mentioned newspapers, aren't they too complicated and too intellectual for them(i'm not saying Daily Sun readers are dumb).

We need a newspapers that INSIPIRE, MOTIVATE AND EDUCATE, but then again positive news doesn't sell ,so says the EDITORS.

Oh, give me a break! To all those sensitive little souls out there......if people aren't keen to experience gore, could you kindly tell me why the traffic comes to a screeching halt on the highway and much rubber-necking ensues if there is just a vague indication of an accident? Sun horro pics  by  Craig
I didn't see the newspaper but I am of the opinion that we need to know what is happening around us. We must be shown, via the newspaper media what man/woman does to man/woman [and child for that matter]. We musn't encapsulate ourselves in a cocoon of security that it will never happen to us. We live in a violent society. We must be alert to whats' happening around us!

Get real! This newspaper changes people's lives!  by  Justin Arenstein
Has anyone here actually read the story that went with the pic, or with the follo-up story today??

The original story was about an injustice that wrecked a woman's life, & police bungling that allows her attacker to walk free. The follow-up story today covers the outpouring of sympathy & support by readers. The pic you are all whinging about has won the victim the first moral & material support she's received since the attack, & has galvanised police into actually doing something about the case.

This is not the only such victory for DailySun. The paper has used its graphic approach to news to help fundraise for operations to deformed kids, treatment for sick rural gogos, & material assistance for a string of other 'ordinary people'.

DailySun also boasts some of the highest educational content levels of any SA newspaper.

Surely, as media professionals, you guys should actually read the paper before knocking it??

This is an inslut to black people, I am pretty sure, you cannever refer your off-springs to the Daily Sun for a School project..........would you?

There is simply nothing to be gained from it.....with Headlines like "I had Sex with a DOG"......"Ther's Muti in My Fridge"......etc,etc

How are you expecting to build an intellectual resourse out of that?

spare the family  by  jislaaik
Well now, while ordering my french fries from Bimbos's and waiting for the food, I always tend to look at the magazines on the stand... see what the different newspapers have to say... and time and time again the french fries just don't taste the same after I've seen the Daily Sun's cover page.
Like today's... picture of an 18-year old boy who hanged himself because he couldn't face the humiliation of having lost a fight at school. But the caption is the best... his face has been "blacked out" (read thin black block over his eyes) to spare his family more hurt and sorrow...

Nothing Wrong With The Pic  by  Bettie Davis
Would porn and sleazy stories made a mark? I didn't see anything wrong with that, that's what the papers are there for, to inform and educate, for a very long time people where sweeping dirt under their carpets and no one did anything about it, and this was fine because we are so caught up in our self made world we don't want to know another person's agony, well brace yourself time has come for that dirt to be cleaned out, it has never been easy but we have to do it, you see the reason that we have so much child and women abuse today is because it has been an ongoing than" for a very long time, now time has come for this to stop, and how do you do it by exposing those who are committing these evil deeds, like it or not it must be exposed, aren't you tired of hearing of how many kids have been raped, and killed, how young kids drink and smoke their lives away, and no one does anything about it,how would you tell what happened unless you use the only tool there is, I will not deny some of these are trully shocking but can anyone make it easier, when they where happening in the dark was there any positive deliverence? I think that the only time that people can correct what is wrong is by seeing it, and remember the saying IF AINT BROKEN DON'T FIX, now we know that there's allot of broken things it's now time for us to pick up the pieces and fix it own up to our resposibility, we have whether directly or indirectly contributed towards the loss of the moral fiber in our society.

People are unbeliavable  by  Vusumuzi
People always boasts about how much they want and enjoy things that are real and true. It is an irony that the very same people are now whining after tasting bitter reality.

That was reality as painful and frustrating as it was but it did happen. If I can remember it was a husband or boyfriend who did that to his girlfriend. Now people are crying foul I am curiously asking what for?

Haven`t I always complained about the bad socialisation process resulting from our social system that is infiltrated by patriarchy. A man sees a woman as a sexual object to be exploited. Isn`t that the view that most of men hold. Daily Sun was exposing the consequences of our social system that brought us up. Running away from that won`t help.

We were all happy having women depending on us now that they are becoming independent we are going to see more of what that man did happening. Instead of complaining about what Daily Sun showed us, we should be trying to amend our social system. Other than that we might just as well let Daily Sun do what it does best exposing the unfabricated truth.
