Then again the Germany logo wasn't that hot either...and lets face it, nobody remebers what the 2002 logo looked like, and when we open our eyes again nobody will remember the 2006 logo and so on...
How about we stop wasting time moaning about the logo (which no one really cares about) and lets spend our energy for the next 4 years making our country great and putting on the most spectacular World Cup, "African style." No one likes a moaner and the last thing the world needs to see is to see South Africans whinging about how we cant do it, that's a great way to entice tourists, investors etc to come to OUR country!
I posted a forum asking the same question, is this the best we have to offer. conceptually it is very fist level - not even that. the African continent with a deformed soccer player on top?
I also wanted to find out the process that was taken to chose the agency, excuse my ignorance but how was that process facilitated.
... that is all South Africans are good for these days. We're not good enough for this. we're not good enough for that. We're not going to be ready for 2010. The Gautrain is a bad idea. I just knew someone would have found someting to moan about in the 2010 World Cup logo. Come on guys. We're all in this toghether. let's look at the bright side. Let's all take part in building our nation. Let's stand together and show the world what we're made of. Let's not be so angry please.
Right on - If pessimism was a country it would be South Africa.
Let's make it a better place, stop looking at every single little detail and start looking at the bigger picture. Think about what the 2010 WC is going to do.
Will there ever be an end to these moaners?? Before 94 elections they said SA was going to the dogs, most of them with overseas relatives left the country. Those that couldn't leave stayed. I just wish they could leave and watch us from sidelines like all those that are overseas and still hoping to hear about a BIG CIVIL WAR in SA. The logo is goodenough for patriots!!! The rest can EMIGRATE!!! just GO!! LEAVE!!!
One word for all these moaners! EMIGRATE!! like all those moaners who did just before the 94 elections. You guys are pulling us down. Leave!!! Go!!! we won't miss you, we'll replace you quick!!! Our logo is fine, you don't like it then toughff china.
Ok now that all you bright sparks have commented negatively, does that make you better designers? NO I dont think so and for the record whether you moaners are happy or not IT IS THE 2010 logo. Design is a process and it has been followed here. This logo won by a long shot perhaps if you smart asses read the brief and followed this process would understand why this particular logo. Africa is not abot Leapord spots its about the vibrance the people the and all is reprensented in this logo. Africa is busy and so is the World cup so really you need to swallow your sour grapes. Shame on you.
[Note: this comment has been edited by the Bizcommunity.com Moderator.]
for on the second coming of the chris those of you who may have judged 2010 will you, yourselves be judged by an audience of Michael Jackson’s piers. how bout that? crap logo yes!
It is eye-catching:-)) One too many balls though. Don't like the balls!!!!Not clear which ball he is running after. A more classic and sophisticated font should have been used.
I'm with Dee, you people are serious whiners... by D
You're also probably the same idiots who tell the world how awful South Africa is, how we won't be ready for 2010, and how it's all going to be a flop. Move to Canada if you have nothing nice to say!
I am the Runny Babbit... If you don't know of me yet, you will very shortly... Anyway, I don't know who designed the logo but let me just say this,...he/she is a "God!!". This is creativity at it's best man!!!. South Africa, a country that is really the funny bone of the world - lying rather dormant for the most part, again with impeccable timing I may add, sends a message to the world, a sensation if you like that's peculiarly funny, yet burningly poignant. I mean, who would have thought that such creativity could stem from a nation so confused by who it actually is. It’s GENIUS!!! Pure GENIUS!! Instead of creating an identity reflective of football, a sport which in truth is highly over-rated, this Design Guru has managed the unthinkable. How crazy is the logo? With comments in the press calling it “the frog and the pork chop!”, and how at first it’s quite ugly, but only because it’s new, and then, as with an ugly child, you start to love it – this is the most whacked creativity I have seen in a long time! Maybe it’s the blend of what for all intent and purpose could be the African break-dancing championship, splashed onto a canvas of imperfection that you can almost taste. I see a message to the world, and it’s saying that if you thought Zidane’s move was wicked – check this out! Why design the expected? This little abortion is what makes me proud to be a South African Designer, actually, a South African in general. Viva la Pork Chop!!
Yes you were wrong and you still have 4 years to swallow your smarty comments and pride and to also learn about design. I bet you the same guys that are also moaning about the Gautrain.Admit it you guys are sorry and yes you have made fools out of yourselves.Say you sorry and you'll get a free t shirt thats written "I HAVE BEEN AN IDIOT ABOUT 2010" then we'll all forget about It DEAL?....ok fluzies free T-shirts on the way.
If all the above drivel is indicative of the design industry in this country, then we really are in deep pooh. Hope to god nobody is actually paying you all salaries.
Do u know what design is buddy or r u just a wanna bee that has access to the net.Do u even know the meaning of plonking or wait do u think this logo was just chosen over nite. Now pal if ur such a great designer why arent talking about ur designs? cud it be the fact that u are a pure nothing in the design industry?do u even know what a world cup logo is all about cos u not saying anything but salaries. As a designer it is a client that pays the salary! And for the record Fifa is a big client they bought that concept plus the solution, its a big process u sound very in expirience actually u sound like u have absolutely nothing but access to the net UR STUPID.and u better not be around in 4 the next 4years cos that logo is here to stay blinking fool.
I think they could have definitely done better with the logo. The fact that someone doesn't find it appealing does not mean they hate the entire country, so grow up!!!
I believe that South Africa is going to set a benchmark for the all the other countries who are left to host the World Cup after us.
But I still don't like the logo and I don't have the skill to produce something better. However we definitely have talent in this country that could put that logo to shame, I'm sure of it...
I think people should keep in mind that a logo's like that is based on a lot of what the clients want and that something like that logo could have started out as someting GREAT and got changed into something completely different!
Yes it's busy, yes it's partially black, yes it's messy, yes it's upside down in some cases, yes it's fun, yes it's representative of land and gold and earth and fire and all those inspirational things this country is made up of. Yes, it's South Africa after all.
Agree - 100% African LOGO - and it damn good!! by Proud South African
the logo speaks Africa, if you have not realized that by now then you need a reality check as where in the world your living! Thanks to the fact that I am not a designer do I appreciate the message it conveys, for the first time in Africa the World Cup Logo needs not to be replicated to imitate the developed nations "sterile" logos it's quite accustomed to over the past decades. It's truly ethnic and justified to entire African Nation ... To the moaners I too would like to see what you come up with if you think it's all too bad. I am waiting anxiously...
ooh i love the ball sitting on the couch for the 2010...oops its a bird?...no...plane?...no...Its a frog playin football with a porkchop. It really needs some more colours, and some more shapes added to it. I love the way it symbolises unity of our Great and wonderful Talented Nation. FIFA Well done! BTW can a good samaritan please post the basic rules from class about Logo design. lets educate the nation on what makes a good logo design
hey wheres the kitchen sink oh there it is by Fuzzy Wuzzy
Lovely logo the ball is great on the couch ??? oops, is it a bird? no... a plane? nope... is a frog playin soccer with porkchop. everyone in class who remembers the basics of Logo design and the rules? can we get a good samarithan to post it so everyone can be educated a lil bit
My mind was cluttered even my name is can't guys see "lebzazuza".My mind is so cluttered that I just complain about stuff I dont know jack about...Sorry im just cluttered....and my dreams are cluttered.
After feeling quite insulted as some people generalised that those who left SA are waiting for a civil war to break out, I decided to send the logo around the office, all predominantly from the uk (I work in England). Most thought it was vibrant and colourful, but confusing due to the 'stick' through his leg. And many did point out that the person was black and wondered if that would cause tension. But most comments came afterwards with many people asking if I had seen the recent article stating that SA topped the UK's crime watch list'. I think SA has bigger problems to worry about, if things carry on the way they are no one will ever see the logo as they won't be making the journey...
with that kind of attitude. At least the ones left behind are trying to DO something about the crime, and the, as you say, "Bigger Problems.' Unlike 'sideliners' like yourself who sit 10 000km away and 'head warnings' to us! Eish, I'm glad I stayed. Hanskakie. (I know I spelt that wrong, but you get the point.)
I'm sorry you find international feedback so useless. I would think that comments from foreigners (not myself but staff here) would be helpful and insightful, not disregarded because it disagrees with what you you think. I am proud to be South African, and I will return home, regardless of the crime. But tourists tend to be put off of SA because of the violent crime that is reported on a regular basis in the UK. And with the recent stats coming out its not doing anything to encourage them to make the journey to SA for the World Cup.
Like some of the others who have commented, you also think that I am against South Africa, why not think a little further than your nose and realise people leave for many different reasons.
The German Logo is still dominating our acceptance of the 2010 logo by Mulligan Pearce
Think back when the new SA flag was introduced. The take up and support was low. Today, all our stadiums and public places are covered with the new flag.
Give it time; we'll get use to it and embrace it for SA and the continent...
Be positive and think about the benefits for all. The logo most probably showcase our unique diverse cultures and ability to "vasbyt" and move forward
I wonder if anyone who is posted a comment on this managed to catch the unveiling of the logo transmitted on SABC 1. hmmm ?? I must say that when I first saw the logo there were mixed feelings, I liked the african feel although found the logo a little busy.. all that aside when they unveiled the logo and explained what all the different elements meant and how it was chosen.. well lets just say that I find myself defending the logo.
All in all I think that we will find the logo will grow on us and at least it kicks the crap out of the Germany logo
I am all for bring South Africa on the map with the 2010 world cup.
We really had look beyond South Africa and Africa when we designed this logo. The logo should have had a more international flavour.
The logo should have been simpler, it just does not work when reduced. The first basic rule has been over looked, it will not work as a one colour logo. And what is up with the font when we were in the late '80's early '90's it would have been the ideal font to use, but not for 2010.
Surely we can go more stylish, simpler and modern. Just because we are in the corner of Africa, it does not mean that we blind to international design with an African flavour.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and frankly at first glance the logo looks okay for a rough draft. A little more work could have gone into it to give it a bit of flare. Why is the soccer player black and the stick through his leg black i think the colors should of been changed, frankly if i had known where to submit a logo for this campaign i would have. I think Germany's logo was better by far.
Here's what I reckon they should do with it. by Monty
The logo itself has some nice elements. The part that doesn't look good is the BLUE RIGHT ANGLE that dominates most of the right hand side of the logo. I think if they took that part out, because it is irrelevant,( no sh*! it's the FIFA world cup, so you don't need to mention that. None of the other Fifa logo's do. ) and stick with just the main "AFRIBYCYCLEKICK" focus point ending just after the stylish blue streak then it would be a kick ass logo. I reckon lose all the blue parts, THEY SUCK...since when did Africa do Blue?
it is surly one of the worst logos i have seen to date, poor poor attemt at a logo, sure we are a multi colored nation............... but dame not in this way.................
Wow we have some experienced, educated designers commenting on this. I can hear form your comments that you all know the brief and mandatory’s very well. I’m sure if you did it the client would have gone for your preferred route first time without any changes.
Earlier I posted a comment saying the following "it is surly one of the worst logos i have seen to date, poor poor attemt at a logo, sure we are a multi colored nation............... but dame not in this way.................". In giving this some thought, and in reading the responses to my comment, I feel I owe everyone an apology. I have a lot going on in my life at the moment and I think I took my anger out on logo which is actually quite beautiful. I know I could never have done anything remotely this brilliant! Well done Team!!!
Change your name to full monty we'll start talking again when u have done enaf research to suit ur smarty comments pearl cos that blue that you see is reprentetive of fifa and all the new world cup logos we'll be based in that format. Oops you were trying to be smart weren't you? go home...bid it.
Dude you forgetting its similar to Africa Inside, or maybe FIFA inside...hmm where have i seen this before Aah Indel pentium 4 inside, Go africa go we are Original arent we
I like the logo. I am sure we can pull this off. All the people complaining are people who never go into the townships and dont know what happens there. Things are changing, we are not Germany and shouldn't try to be.
This is why I gotta think thrice before posting on these forums. I never said I had the answer. I merely thought that we, as professional individuals in the same field could get to talking about it. But when u see how defensive some people get when u even START to CRIT [NOT DEMEAN or TRASH – if u ever made it through a design school, u would know that a "crit" can also be good.], u are thankful u never have to work with some of the narrow-mindedness that prevails here. pity.
I pointed out POSITIVES as well as Negatives. And I never said I outright hated it, as some goons are protesting. Get your facts straight, and READ before posting an ill-informed reply. Common logic.
AND NO, I DO NOT POSSESS THE PERFECT SOLUTION.
But if anyone's serious about discussing this on a casual note – my email is noted – I think the logo as is a good conecpt, but it needs to be looked at much more carefully.
** I'm also Proudly SA – but that doesn't mean I will blindly accept everything that's put before me [as some of u gladly do].
...this is a chat "forum"!! Not your local community notice board. That little bit of dribble is as usefull as I'm sure you are as a designer. Well written Forest!!! Now run! Clearly the only thing thats third world here is your education?
Creative does not speak to the greatness of the achievement by Nivasha
I have to admit I am one helleva patriotic South African and thats why I am passionate about my view that the logo simply does not reflect the greatness of this country, I agree with Rod, it does not work visually, its old-fashioned and it does not "jump" out at you. For the next 4 years this logo will be pumped in every facet of our existence. It should have been something to be really proud of. Are we saying that this is the best creative output we have in this country..no way!
I never said this logo doesn't work visually, nor did I say it's old-fashioned! Please be careful of roping others into your "view" points! My advice to you is look at it again. I'm not yet convinced that it's great, but it's certainly growing on me.
D - If that was you that wrote the comment about coming home, it was rather childish! For the record i never posted that comment. People on this site really infuriate me, its a place to share thoughts and get back intelligent comments. Not once did I say SA is an awful place and everyone should jump ship! I will be coming home one day, but that still doesn't mean I think the logo is a genius piece of work.
Okay, now I know what keeps these forums ticking... yeah... anyone who considers themselves more intelligent than a soccer ball can pose as anyone else they wish, then comment on this forum as if it was someone else.
eg: there is a comment here called "Hold it!" with words i never wrote. Grow up kiddies. Please.
doesn't say much for the level of intelligence on this forum, never mind security on this site.
I suppose I'll air my views elsewhere...where people are grown up enough to actually understand the word "opinion"
I can at least spell. The bozo who responded to you, I don't think, has ever been to school! If you want to come home, then I would absolutely 100% encourage that. I did!
I live at Paternoster and I like the logo very much. I cannot think that I are going to get to see Brasil play live in our land! It will be going very cool. The logo catches this spirit very good. I are proud to be part of this lekker vibe. Viva the logo!
Why is it that South Africans consistently compare their achievements to the USA, Europe etc. We (South Africans) have an inferiority complex and never acknowledge our strengths or abilities as a nation. I like the logo, it is uniquely South African. Why always follow norms, take a leap of faith and know that as South Africans we will deliver a successful World Cup and hopefully with lots of South African flair. Local is Lekker!
...the most derogative saying EVER invented! "Local is Lekker" is a way of saying "ja ok - it's not as good as elsewhere but at least lets be suportive of the local market". I wish we could ban that saying forever. Local is NOT lekker. It is either good or bad (as you would judge anything from elsewhere). Lets stop judging South African design/art/music in its own created "local" catagory and let it stand up to it's own against anything from an international perspective.
There's abslutely nothing wrong with the logo. I think all the the people with bad critics wish they were chosen to design the logo. It truly reflects the game of soccer and our continent. It's appropriate, keep it up designer.
I thought Germany's logo was not that great...until I saw ours. It looks like a phase 2 scamp. I am sad to say - BECAUSE I have seen the creatively phenomenal, smart and relevant design SA has to offer (YDE, Design INDABA, Vuka's, Loeries, VW, Power of X campaign, Vida e Caffe, etc) - that seeing the 2010 logo was like ordering a double-cream chocolate milkshake with choc chip and flake sprinkles and instead being bestowed with a tot of hot vinegar.
I love ordering a double-cream chocolate milkshake with choc chip and flake sprinkles and instead being bestowed with a tot of hot vinegar and I know im sick in thoughts. I was sick when I said our logo was bad and I regret comparing it to clothing label logo like YDE cos im slightly fag and im obsessed with clothing. I thought Design Indaba would enlighten me but I thought wrong. So on behalf of all the assholes that dont like the 2010 logo Im deeply sorry.i deserve to be punished 4 my ignorace.IM SORRY GUYS BUT I am plain stupid....
It's amazing how quickly the criticism of the logo led to people being told to "LEAVE" and "EMIGRATE". Where is our right to freedom of expression? I am afraid for our future if the people who are shouting for the critics to leave, would be the only ones left to run our country because the diversity we are trying to devlop would be curtailed. Lively debate and difference of opinion shows intelligence...say no more!!
Yes i love my country and its people and I express my un existant intellegence on the net.Im at work and I think my stupid opinions makes me have lekker debate. The people that love the 2010 logo will be the only people left cos the rest of us are goin to commit suicide cos we anything but proud of our logo.Im sorry for my OVER ERECTION cos I came too quick about the 2010 logo.
who has even the most virginal eye for composition and colour, will tell you that it sucks! And it is a class act suck as well! Fair enough the logo my have been changed through reverts etc., but people come on! I don't see how anyone can truly like this logo. It was a golden oppurtunity to break from world cup logo stereotypes and create an african identity for the world cup, but alas....
I have the most virginal eye for composition and colour, will tell you that I suck!Im obviously not aware of a lot of things about the industry anyway Im still studying design so revert is the only word i probably hear from my lecturers.I think I know a lot about composition and colour but then again its just my side effect and not facts.Yes I do agree that 1 day just 1 day I will be in a leading Design place and i will understand industry dynamics and processes.Gosh I wish i was the 1 that designed this logo, damn man what a side effect. Eish 1 day I hope I also step in the shoes of the great designer that designed this logo. But I'll get there 1 day,i'll just keep on drawing and learning colours and composition till I fit 4 industry and i'll eventually learn what design is not ART.
Heres reality ive been in the industry for 6 years.Hey guys im a mid or may be a senior, but I still don't know squat about the design industry Im a Real Sydafek...Ive actually just told myself i Suck! don't u see I even took a stand to tell the world ive been in industry this long but i still suck...why do u think im a Sydafek....And either way i'll still see this logo in the Next 4 years and its already giving me Sydafeks
A friend from Russia e-mailed me to say our "logo" was funny, i thought she meant our flag, as i hadn't seen the 2010 soccer logo, now i have, i understand. When Russians say something's funny, it's polite for it sucks.
A friend from Russia e-mailed me to say our "logo" was funny .When Russians say something's funny, it's polite for it sucks and u know what more funny cos he knows i'd be stupid enough to confuse english and their funny meaning of funny. Cos I actually thought about it, and I actually didn't laugh when I looked at it...wait guys heres more evidence of how funny im actually I thought he was talking about the flag cos i didnt know what a logo is in the first place yahahahaha...im really funny hey.
Hi people this is ur big friends rod.Does anybody remember me,come on guys im sure u do u can't just forget me im like the Jesus of logo designs. Im pleased to tell u that ur support to my negative comments about the logo have earned us all an opportunity to come up with a new logo for the 2010.I have been elected to be the new creative director for the logo. Thanks guys for supporting my comments.Im also pleased to tell u that i will be opening a "Smart Comments Nursary School since im the leading smart commentator of the logo. This has been my dream for a longtime now thank u. Check the new logo on biz community at 3 o'clock. If theres any of u talented and young smart commentators out there, Im pleased to tell u that "we the negative people can make it in this world of bad design" but u have to speak out loud if u dont like something. So,If u guys have any comments what so ever heres my email address email any negative comments to me i'll die like Jesus for ur sins.
Shame guys Feel little bit Sorry by Ama Finda Finda
No guys this is the wrong logo, isn’t this logo for the Paraplegic football world cup? Well our country is on of many great talents, make a plan, we will always find a way who cares what it looks like as long as it works (good example to learn from watching the taxis), and this is how we show it by letting the good talent fall behind and those who con their way into positions be the front end of our development. Peeps this is not the only example, We let rapists to go free, coz he found a cure for aids, hmm, We build a train that will take forever to build cost a lot of taxpayers money and become a white elephant, just for the world cup, though I doubt nobody will ever use it, coz it’ll cost too much for the consumers. The Gautrain costs a lot guys don’t mock it, Just to show you how well South Africa manages its finances, we have the Military corvettes/Mercedes ML stories, but best of all we’ve got so much money in this country we can Rename everything we want to just to suit our need, and make people feel happy for a while. Who cares we said we’ll rename Jan Smuts Airport because its too political and we don’t want political names in our airports, not to worry because the Taxpayer will cover the costs, Lets Rename it JHB International, and rename whatever we feel like just because we can confuse the world out of tourists, and make everyone reprint business cards and addresses, hmm the government will benefit because they make money and get famous, Ok yes and that costs the tax payer money too? Uhm ok now the government gets tired of the Airports name, its silly to think of putting a price on our heritage, despite that everyone claims so much poverty, and fuel hikes, interest rate hikes, etc, think for a while we should call it O R Thambo Airport, lets celebrate his victory for our country, nobody will mind, it will only cost a few millions or so. O R Thambo, wait isn’t he political...Shhhh the people forgot what we said before JHB international! And what about Mahatma Ghandi whom Nelson Mandela followed the non violence and truth, didn’t Ghandi do anything for our country? All he got is just a square. Fairness in SA I cry…..These are the Days of our Country, and so the story goes, One comedy Saga after the other, It makes you think whether its worthwhile to shit back laugh and enjoy the humour our beloved country entertains us with, or to try and help our country grow only to find out that you futile attempts only get shot down by big shots who love the power trip they are on. Is it really worth it or every man for himself? To me it seems like the whole of SA is just interested in making money and Striking and they have good reason too because the petrol price is too high, money gets wasted, the poor gets poorer and it seems that the only way to make money is the easy way and commit a crime? Now is this a way to bring up SA, I really hope some big shot reads this and takes a hint, use the right experienced people for the right jobs, by the way I’m black and I’m proud, I’m just not sure which direction is the right one and nobody wants to ”lead” the right way anymore. So sad a country, crime free, poverty free and we have everything we need and want here in South Africa, including Fuel. So what we know how to pocket money waste it and make shift something that is as they say “Finda Finda” just so it works. Who cares who suffers and who doesn’t?
Rod - i totally agreed with you in the beginning - this was meant to be a forum for constuctive critism, and turned into a bit of a dog show - which you continue to fuel with your childish comments. let it go - youre better than that.
"You want it look African? Then make it rough and colourful!... " This is the shortcut that is limiting our designers. Just because Africa is the host doesn't mean you have to use every colour under the sun. We have to get rid of this "make it look African" thinking. It's tired and limiting. I agree with most of you guys, this is not the best South Africa can do. It reminds me of a project done by my juniors at the Greenside Design Centre. Actually some of them did better that this. As for the non-designers who say the logo is OK, get out of the way and let real designers speak. working with designers doesn't make you a designer.
Firstly, it frightens me to think that with your writing skills, you are in a position to educate others... then again, the Greenside Design Centre has produced some of, if not the most incompetent "designers" I have ever seen. It's a pathetic excuse for a design school, and it's institutions like that which weaken our industry. It's not every colour under the sun you idiot, it's obviously the FIFA colours as required, and the colours reflecting the SA FLAG, AS REQUIRED!!!!! But then you realising that is a bit of a stretch I'm sure...
Secondly, your comments on the "non-designers" is the most narrow minded bullshit I have heard since ...well, since Bush!! Designers don't design for fellow designers. On the contrary, the audience is vastly from non-design backgrounds, and it's their comments that in turn matter most!!!
As a designer myself, I am ashamed to be sharing a profession with the likes of you, and to all the "non-designers" out there, it seems you're lucky to labeled as such. I apologise for Aristotle, hoping you too will brush his views off as being nothing more than the drunken banter of an attention craving moron shackled by a dream of one day being creative...
and this -"working with designers doesn't make you a designer." lay off the booze Barny!! You have to be drunk to say something like this on a public forum...
Now go to the corner and think about what you’ve done!!!
To the designer of the logo, whomever you are – it’s not the best logo I have ever seen either, but I can assure you that with the knowledge of how this industry operates, especially when the client and their decisions span both political and global agenda’s – it’s not bad at all..
Hey guys please shout if u ever head of this centre cos this centre is a SHORTCUT.Oops nobody ever head of it... actually it is right 4 the big shots like those awesome designers that designed the 2010 logo to stick to what they best known for "Designing the worlds greatest logos...U know ! This centre is not 4 design its for wannabees so if u wanna be a De-signer go to the Greenside cos u'll learn how to de-sign in a fewer colours cos this place is green green green with envy 4 the world greatest! So come to my centre and became Junior u'll de the best in the green bush.
whoever wrote this knows nothing about the design industry Do you think that the designer actually has a say in the final product? It's always the corporate idiot ontop that makes the final decisions and more often than not, it looks like crap
and how do i know this?...because i design for corporate idiots every single day!
Switch, this is not your finest hour. I am sure there was a commitee of ignorant people that influenced the final product. I am sure that you really can do a lot better than this and probably did present a hell of a lot better work. Who is really responsible for this rather poor showing? I think I know the answer, so do the rest of us.
It may seem to portray a very "Africa is one big country" idea and not really show south africa per se, but the simple, single minded design process is delightful, clean and concise. Their subsequent executions are also brilliant. I'm not saying it is right, but the PROCESS is spot on. I'm really sick of you south africans and your Pseudo Patriotism - "Rah Rah, we're like sooooo integrated and happy and vibey and our country's great and if you don't like us then you can bugger off!" BS people. Your country's a mess, it's become the laughing stock of the international community on every level from design to employment, aids and equal opportunity. You are only a number if years away from Zimbabwe and you're all using the supposed fabulousness of the country in which to bury your heads. Cowards. Wake up!
Switch, this is not my finest hour. I am sure i was ignorant to think that my stupidity would influence the final product. I am sure that you really can do a lot better without my envy,im presently a hell of a lot depressed by ur better work. Who is really responsible for this rather awesome showing? I think I helusinating to think I knew the answer, so do the rest of us that share drugs and thoughts with me.
Its good to know that people have opinions and do not settle for what is given to them, the right to an opinion is a wondeful thing. Its also good for people to like what they see. I cannot understand how a discusion about a logo can actually make people turn their rage towards people that left the country, THATS disgusting. When I first saw the logo my first reaction was... "why use africa!!!"... I soon saw the ignorance of my comment. I thought it has a cool feel, and I can imagine how some people will "relate" to it, I also feel that is falls a bit flat. A comment was made that there is design in South Africa that is more indicative of what we, as SA designers, are capable of and I do agree. Yes the logo is very likely to have been influenced ,in a big way, by the client. My only critism would be if we are capable of doing sooooo much better, why do we not stand up to clients and really enforce the best way to go. All agencies are guilty of this, and when we shake off that ball and chain and stand up for our work, as design/advertising agencies, amazing things happen. The work that wins awards or stands out or is astounding is the work that people can see that designers have been fighting for. In all I think there WAS room for improvement, however I also acknowledge that the logo is not likely to change and it will most likely be, whether we like it or not. Its a logo, not the governing body for the Gautrain, or an attack on emigrants, the point is.... its a freaken logo. SA is getting a chance to come right, just embrace it and see what comes of it. Later!
"why use africa!!!"... I just had a very spiritual moment with myself and Ive just came to my senses our continents name is africa I was wrong to have asked such a retorical question. I've been having bad moments in my life where i have been realising the that design is not about awards and once again im sorry to all desgn and advertising agency's for suggesting that they should waste their time in trying to instill their passion for design on clients even though they are the ones that pay my salary. It was obviously a dumb idea I shouln't have said.Im also in the industry " a bit of an underdog" and ive always fought with clients about what i think they should buy.At some point i even told the client to go screw himself if he doesn't go with what i wanted him to go withPlease dont make the decisions that i've made but gosh i wish i designed that logo.
All of us here are doing a crit on the logo, lets get someone to post a link to a place where we can submit our attempts. I am game to do a design for the logo, i dont know what the requirements are and I am prepared to put my money where my mouth is. gimme the requirements and an upload where i can strut my concept, then everyone can crit that. Anyone else up for the challenge? Lets show the real talent and separate the men from the boys
Yes, Honey, that's the URL, and that's the company. I love their feel for design, but what happened with THAT logo?
I can't understand?
Here's the irony, quoted from their website: " Design Ethos: We offer intelligent solutions characterised by their elegant simplicity. Our Design solutions represent a meticulous synthesis of emotion and intellect. We call it Design with integrity...."
In the logo in question: 1. where is the simplicity?
So hubby u do AGREE with me after all when I say Switch Rules cos they offer intelligent solutions characterised by their elegant simplicity. Our Design solutions represent a meticulous synthesis of emotion and intellect. We call it Design with integrity...." 1. where is the simplicity?
We'll its really simple cos Switch won the bid for designing the 2010 logo Not by luck but by design. They won by 30 points from the other great companies in the country so hubby this is really by a long shot its that simple. All the judges chose this logo and that isnt a coinsidence lovey. Anyway hubby its pointless of u trying to be a designer u shud become a fashion designer "Mr Personality"...? or may be an IT guy " since u love checking URL's Its that simple.Stop ferffing and let Switch do what they do best...and one day u'll get there.Honey u said it U LOVE THEIR FEEL FOR DESIGN...be like switch may be they'll open a fashion store for meterosexuals like urself Mr Personality anyway Hubby im gon kiss the ass of the designer of this logo while u swallow those sour grapes....COS He's just too great.
Pumpkin, I feel a headache coming on... by Mr Personality
My Dear Sugardumpling...
Okay, so they won by 30 points. I would like to know who made up the panel that made the final decision, Pookie. Go and research it, won't you. In fact – Go and research it, damnit!
The point is, they may fool the public and/or a few ill-informed 'dignitaries', they can't fool their peers. That's why this "winning design" doesn't even feature on their website! If they were honest to themselves, they would at least not shy away from the reaction they are getting from their fellow professionals, surely?
Yes, yes, Shnookums, I know you're always right [as stipulated in our nuptial contract], but when I'm good, I'm good. I know...
...and please don't think wearing that Beckham shirt is gonna change my view...
Tests? Proofs?Games? Crits? Ok lets quick all this I just realise that designers have no time for crap so im sorry for all my stupid suggestions.I didnt realise who stupid i sounded sorry guys from now on i'll put a tempon where my mouth is and bleeds all the shit ive just said on it.
whoever u are impersonator, you need to learn to spell first, Hmm impersonator, makes one ponder if u follow plagirism as well. I challenge whoever and whenever lets prove this thing out, put your money where your mouth is, someone setup a public upload with the criteria and lets see what we can come up with.....or are some peeps scared like ol impersonator here
tell your guys to stop punting your company, your work is good. if its was you guys, i would like to know how much influence the client had to change it to the final product.
Your work is good. You guys are a great company thats exactly why u 1 the bid for designing the 2010 logo Yes its is you guys, i would like to know how much you influenced me on the final product cos all the judges voted for your logo over ten other agencies. And I also know it wasn't a coinsidence.I heard you guys actually won by 30 points so you guys aren't wenkers now I know.I mean guys think about it if u won by 30 points to other great agencies...that makes u GOD.Yes your work is truly good. And I now I cant act like I dont know what happened cos your guys rock,as a matter of fact pls employ me?
Those in the who lack knowledge don't like it, and the others like my self dont either. True test will be my stupidity. In 2010...i'll love to hate it even more.
i just waxed my pubes with the ink that printed this logo and im starting to feel better about it...Guys the logo is so great once my pubes are waxed with its ink oh what a great feeling it is.May be i'll also be as great as this company one day.
Come on guys. Switch is an at its best an average and its worst a weak design agency. Let me think. have they done one piece of work that stood out.... Not in my books. I think it's a pity and a wasted opportunity. They should have asked designers all over the country to work on this. Pity. There are brilliant advertising/ design shops - Daddy buy me a pony, Grid???????????????????
They should have asked designers all over the country by Sam
Grid??????????????????? ask again buddy where was grid in the list of agencies that pitched for the 2010 logo design. There was a couple of agencies example jupiter drawing room buddy.U right daddy must buy u a pony and he should smack u for ur ignorance especially if u clain to be in the industry cos u dont sound too informed about what happening around u.How can u suggest such an obvious thing...it is a given that the 2010 logo be designed by the top design agencies in South Africa and that is exactly how it was done.Switch won by 30 pionts from the rest so,it isnt a coinsidence buddy.Swallow those sour grapes b4 u choke dummy. In total all the 6 judges voted for that logo.Stop the ignorance and learn from the best Sam.
Listen here toffie! My blind, armless, legless, illiterate, squint, Zimbabwean neighbour with the funny twitch would have done a better job. You carry on about the 30 points. 30 points! 30 points! I can just see you jump up and down screaming 3O points. OMG You make me sick. Ja toffie you think its has to be great because the six judges said so. There are millions of people in Zim who believe Mugabe is a saint. Switch should close down and become a laundromat. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
I think green machanic can design a better logo than this by dodo
i heard that the company that really designed this logo is called Green Machanics Media Solutions and not switch, they rock have you seen their website. They have the most awesome designs. All other agencies are heresay compared to the skill Green Machanics offer. All you athers are losers
Then again the Germany logo wasn't that hot either...and lets face it, nobody remebers what the 2002 logo looked like, and when we open our eyes again nobody will remember the 2006 logo and so on...
