Coconuts is theatrical, over the top tripe  by  Ho hum
I really wanted to like this show but it really is a load of bull. The performances (except for Phelicity and the neighbours) are very hammy and over the top, the situations are not funny and also ten years too late. I know the MNET execs enjoy this kind of theatrical, slapstick over the top nonsense and believe that their audience enjoys it but a little subtlety really won't hurt anyone. The character of the father annoys me, he is suppossed to be typical and yet seems to be an English expat. Who can relate to that? Its only redeeming feature is the influence of the comedians on the writing team, but the rest of the team lack the dramatic skills to craft into a seamless clever script. It FEELS like you're watching a comedy. Hopefully Telkom will encourage the talented producers of this country to join the mainstream after being marginilized by the nepotism at MNET and the inefficiencies at SABC.

It's the end product that counts not what you know about comedy writing  by  show me the funny
I've read a number of blogs that agree that this is poor quality on all rounds. Amusingly the creator/director Andrew hit back at viewers on the DSTV website... Poor show. I don't think what you've read or learnt about comedy writing is of any consequence to the viewer. All they want is the end product. And is this case - it sucks.

Why so personal?  by  The Madam
Dear Show me the Funny - I have been following the 'coconuts war' on the dstv site (very entertaining) and I think you missed the fact that Andrew seemed more to be responding to a disgruntled former employee who seemed to have issues. All the hot air aside, I think the show has potential.

And to Ho Hum - did you actually go onto the telkommedia site? I cannot see anyone producing anything with great production value on the budgets they've got on offer. The budgets offered for Comedy is between R120K - R240K per half hour programme. Good luck with that is all I have to say!

The biggest load of crap!!  by  LLV
This show is the most stupid & pointless show to hit our television sets in a long time. Its not funny at all & the acting could not be more annoying if it tried. Stop wasting our tv viewing time by putting nonsense like this on, & give us programs which are entertaining. Id love to be on the set of that show just so that i can throw some vrot tomatoes at those actors, especially the white maid who has to pretend to be black.

Do you really get what we pay for?  by  Francis
My biggest complaint is that its a pay channel and its prime time and I want to sit down with my family and watch something good. We've started hiring DVD's during this time - but now we're just having to spend more money. It's not fair.

whiny little people  by  Get over it
It's called a remote control people you point it at the TV and change the channel. Yes it's pay TV we pay to have variety. So pick one of the other million channels!!! I enjoy the coconuts yes the acting can be over the top sometimes but it gets more crit because it's local I say props to mnet and the producers for giving us some decent local stuff that isn't just a copy of the constant American crap 24/7

Two thumbs down!
I tried watching it but after less than two minutes I felt like picking up the tv & throwing it against the wall. Its one of the most annoying shows Iv ever seen. I dont understand why such rubbish is flighted, or produced to begin with. How anyone can find this show entertaining makes no sense because even someone with the worst taste in what they perceive as quality television wouldn't find this show entertaining.

The Cocosucks
I'd rather watch a full half hour of that crap Cell-C/Hummer ad than insult my brain with that idiotic show.

More Coconuts to come!  by  The Madam
Just read that anohter series of Coconuts is on the way. TV is a business people, mnet would never pay for something that wasn't pulling viewers or making money. so it seems all the haters out there were wrong. i love the show and glad theres more to come. keep laughing South Africa!

Half an hour of listening to jokes about penises!!!!!!!!!!!!  by  TVtime
I didn't think it very appropriate or funny to listen to jokes about circumcisions and vasectomys for half an hour during family time viewing. I was actually quite digusted in tonights episode. That was the last time my family watches that rubbish again. We actually thought there were a few good episodes, but this has just ruined the entire series for me. If these are the story lines now, I would hate to think of what's to come???

Finally!
Well said DivaGirl, it seems that Madam isn't as clever as she thinks she is.
If indeed we must brace ourselves for another season of that crap show, atleast the majority of us who have good taste when it comes to quality television, can have a break from such a remedial programme.

Lighten up!  by  JustChill
I can't wait for Coconuts to start again! Yeah sure, the acting isn't the best in the world, but the humour is brilliant! There were some excellent 1-liners, and NOBODY escaped being poked fun at. Everybody was made fun of - blacks, whites, coloureds, indians, government, men, women, etc. And most of the time those remarks were spot-on. Come on people, lighten up! Learn to laugh at yourselves and the stereotypes that are true of your race and gender.

Generally SA Productions are awful  by  Dundun
Innocent Times - within 5 seconds I could see that it was all filmed against backdrops - they could have at least tried to get the depth perception in sync with the actors in front of the backdrops. Then done something about the acting skills.... or the script, or both.
Johan van der Walt - van der Walts Fault or something like that. Then there's Clips... could probably work with a different presenter.

The Coconuts - absolutely stoopid and over-acted - probably would be better as a stage show.
Remember Madam and Eve? Heaven forbid that should make its way back to the screen...

And last but my very very worst Leon Shuster movies.
South African producers should stay away from comedy - they just don't get it right.
