Comments on How does one get into the magazine industry

start your own magazine  by  soon to be editor
girlfriend stop looking for mercy and hoping someone will hire you as a stylist or assistant or whatever, start your own thing, research, find out what it takes to be an editor of a magazine, source funds, speak to publishing & printing companies,do whatever it takes but for heaven's sake stop resting on your laurels and hoping someone will hire you. It's also one of my dreams and i may not be doing it but one thing i know for sure is that it can be done,we can do it,we are just not doing it because we were made to believe that we cannot do it,yes i'm talking to us black sisters,we are forever looking for mercy and thinking someone has to start something for us.Opportunities are out there girlfriend,we need to grab them before they dissappear right in front of our eyes!
Good Luck!!!

Magazines
Dont you think if it were that easy to start a mag , there'd be dozens and everyone would have a job? lets be real here for a minute...I think the best way to get into the industry is to start small work for a mag get the knowledge and then move on to the next idea...creating a mag? I was given the advise to send in my cv to all the mags, and I will do just that...as much as I want a career in magazines Im willing to start from scracth and learn.

NOT SUCH A GREAT IDEA
Last year alone 56 new print titles were launched in SA. Their primary source of income s advertising and unfortunately quite a few of them will not see the end of the year due to lack of financial support. A great many coients play a "wait and see" game to see how well you do first ito circulation etc. before investing and unless you have sufficient funds to run for at least a year without any major support, don't even bother. The market is crowded, there is a great deal of product parity out there and the advertising revenue pie is not growing fast enough to sustain all of these new print titles, let alone the multitude of new TV channels coming soon. In short, I would think twice about taking the advice to start your own publication.

Think Big  by  Morne Andrews
And this is my answer to you....Think Big, Nothing is impossible. I am launching South Africa's first ever motoring magazine on DVD! Who am I, well i'm an electronic engineer who finished my studies, got the degree but couldn't picture myself behind a pc for the rest of my life. So I got this mad idea to start a motoring magazine on DVD as I love cars and videography, this was a dream come true! It is now a year later and we are still not close to a launching date! I must say, the concept just grew so much, at this stage we have top Celebrity presenters onboard, the best motoring journalists, the best video equipment etc. We should be launching early next year though. Final statements, If you sit and do nothing, nothing will hapen! It was hard work, alot of stressfull times, but I'm still going forward and thats the key! I must add that I serve a big big GOD, without Him, I would still be sitting behind my desk busy with electronics! So yeah, go out there and make your dreams a reality, If you can dream it, you can do it! Watch the space for my new mag....Cheers
