You are good enough to play around designing stuff for friends and family. Definately not good enough to make a living out of it. Not nearly enough to get you a design job in an agency ...
But don't be put off. Hard work can make a difference. Are you prepared, though, for the negative feedback you might get? Look at it in a constructive light. Good luck
Thanks. Constructive criticism goes a long way by G'rag
I guess it's through 'constructive'criticism that I've gotten this far and, honest opinions from designers are exactly what can take me to the next level of my passion. Thank you for the comment.
I've seen worse, especially by individuals who claim that their designers and qualified too. Unless if you want to work for a priniting shop not there yet for an agency or studio. Your porti is not that bad just needs a lot more work and time. Try getting a mentor or something like that if you are really in to this.
I think the main thing is that it is work done for fun - so theres nothing there conceptually
I think that if you took a look at other work thats out there and redesign it, seeing where you could improve it, it would help alot. Sometimes its difficult doing things for the sake of it - I think you lack practice with doing actual briefs.
another thing is that you should read as many books as you can on the priciples of design and books on typography.
To me just about anyone - with the right support and determination - can be a designer. Just a few stand out from the rest though.
I really dont think its that bad - Not one of us was perfect when we started and we still aren't. With the right practice and guidance I think you could make it - just learn as much as possible and do as much as possible to improve yourself. Wish you the best of luck.
P.S - as far as your eye for layout goes its better than a lot of the crap floating around done by "qualified" people. There is some potential - but hey thats just me
You are right, I've never actually done anything based on a brief - and on attempting to improve some designs as a form of practice, that's a real eye opener, I'll do that. Thank you!
You're only bad if you think you've got nothing left to learn by Some Bloke
It's difficult to judge your layout because my eye is immediately drawn to your typography, which looks like your weakness. Great typography can cure bad design just as bad typography can kill good design. There are a lot of sites on the internet that give a lot of background to typography and I think your design would benefit most by improving the way you use type.
I'm not in the fashion industry however here are some tips: Visit the Sanlam Fashion Week and the YDE site, you need to have a viable business and marketing plan and tangible material to present should you be afforded an opportunity to do so. At the fashion week there is usually an exhibition where up and coming designers can showcase their products, or you might want to look into supplying stores with your products.

I have seen your portfolio and can relate to what you say because even though i am a "qualified" designer (did the time ,passed the exams and got the piece of paper)i still have problems in design. my strength lies in conceptualisation but i suck at layout. i have accepted that and have aligned myself with whizz layout people. You can look at your work and tell its not balanced , missing some element ..etc and for that its experience .The thing i admire about you is that you have put yourself out there willing to be critiqued and having a real desire to learn.
If someone asks me the best years of my life , its always college days, try enrolling into one and combined with your passion who knows...
The fact that you are self taught shows extreme determination which bodes well in an industry which is demanding and soul destroying yet produces some of the biggest ego-maniacs the world has seen! Take the criticism from whence it comes and use the advice which is on offer (it's free!). I don't think it's a bad portfolio, the criticism that i would give is that every piece has the same look and feel. Diversify if possible. My creative director once told me that basic talent is paramount. LEARN TO DRAW! Conquer that, and the world is your oyster. Good luck!
i think you've definitely got something! this work is actually pretty good - regardless i think you just need to spend more time looking at design, reading books etc. goodluck
