Relax
Proper English has in no way been thrown away. The type and style of language used in advertising is usually designed to suite that ad and in some cases using pin point accurate English would destroy any appeal of the ad.

Just because modifications to the language may have been made to suite the advertisement does not mean to say that proper English is no longer present, and what is the big deal with everyone not saying every sentence as textbook English. It does not mean to say that they no longer know how to speak it and probably would speak it in the appropriate environment, but in a relaxed environment people speak how they speak.

Loosen up a bit!

Suites me  by  EDS
Please tell me the bizcom moderator spelled every example of "suits" as "suites" in a spirit of irony...

No, I didn't
I took out something personally insulting; I did not fix up the grammar, syntax and spelling.

Please tell me that Loosi's English doesn't grate on your ears! It is a case of too loose me thinks.

Me thinks you stuck up
Im not wrong, your just too narrow minded to the extent where if textbook English is not spoken every second of every day, then the English language is suddenly doomed.

I can assure you that the English language is still very much alive and well.

It would appear that proper English is dead and gone....  by  zimmiehippie
....judging by some of the grammar and punctuation in the replies to this post.

'Your' instead of 'you're' (ironically, an abbreviation of 'you are'), 'suite' instead of 'suit' and 'im' instead of 'I'm' (again, ironic).

There are two sides to this - on the one hand, I agree wholeheartedly with the original poster in that "proper, Queen's English" is truly in danger of being forgotten forever, but on the other hand, there is also the argument that languages are constantly evolving and changing - for example, none of us prance about spouting "thou" and "shalt" and speaking in riddle a la Shakespeare any more, do we?

However, either way, I think it's unfair to blame advertising for the metamorphosis. Don't copywriters try to reach their target market by speaking "their" language - not the other way round?

I must say though, that the Hirsch's ads really do grate my nerves. As does that bl**dy awful Birchmore's car auctions ads on Highveld Stereo - I wish someone would ban them!
