I grew up in the hey-days where my parents (in efforts of being upwardly mobile, shame) would rather we did KFC on Saturday nights. Not once did we ever have Chicken Licken growing up, instead I only just started noticing them again with their current ads and marketing, which prompted me to try it out ...and now I'm addicted to their hot wings! Problem with Chicken Licken (and my need to feed an adiction) is that they are not accessible. In the north there's one behind the Rosebank Mall, there's one around the rank in Randburg and another dodgy one in Foruways Mall, they need to take themselves seriously and do something about where they position themselves in my opinion. And it wouldn't hurt to look cleaner...
Number 103 or whatever number they call to give you your order is just not working for me. I don't understand why They have many workers and yet you still have to wait... And this is the reason why when I'm really hungry I avoid Chicken Licken. Their system of service is just not working.
I agree with you Lerato, the long waiting is not on. KFC on the other hand knows that their Street Wise 2 is a seller, so what they do is prepare more of them in advance, so you just buy them off the oven. But with Chicken Licken you will wait till you get pissed and leave your order.
Also their products are a bit complicated and it's hard to know when you walk in what you gonna buy, unlike at KFC when you know that, it's either Twister, StreetWise or Family dinner. I remember back in the days they used to have crowd pullers like S'DUMO Special Burger, every kid on our block used to love that, that was Chicken Licken at its best. Also in terms of store locating they're lagging by a wide margin.
As far as their chicken is concerned, I find it too spicy and salty.
Their products are complicated. I also never know what to buy when I get there. I stand there trying to figure out what to buy and then when my time comes I start asking the cashier whats what - another time wasted.
I really find their current Ads very funny. I must say I liked it in my childhood days. the Ads have prompted a desire to try again. Although their locations are really not accessible. I live in Cape Town and you find them in hidden places accept in the city opposite KFC.
In-store does not live up to TV promise by Blaqfli
The image portrayed in their ads does not live in-store. Their stores look like they haven't changed since the S'dumo days. And then there's the fact that their outlets are difficult to find. I need to plan a trip to go and buy C-L. KFC on the other hand is well distributed, has simple menus, what you see on TV translates when you go in-store. Even when I feel like C-L (them hot wings are to die for) I often end up settling for KFC or Nando's because they are easy to find and the food won't take an age to come out.
I think their positioning is problematic...I have noticed their adverts but one can struggle to find them..I used to work in Rosebank and to be honest I only came to know where it was because of a workmate who had happended to pass through by mistake..In Randburg its hidden because of the many vendors in front of it..always crowded area one can literally pass without noticing that it is Chicken Liken..Nandos on the other hand is in easy to find places which is nice.
A once off visit to Randburg also hasnt seen me going back after some shoddy service.
I am not a fan of Chicken Licken either, but in terms of location they are trying to improve. They have recently opened two shops in Cresta, one inside the mall and the other one on Republic road.
I hated the ads at first but now they growing on me. They need to vary them a bit, I've seen the sand one way more than the others. And they did make me try the meal although what you guys say about the location is true, battled to find one, they don't even have a store list on their website.
The food was good though and I'd go back if it wasn't a 25 minute drive from where I work.
i don't know if chicken licken's account is still with FCB.. but guys like wing-wing mdlulwa, peter mooka etc have move don from FCB ages ago.. and right there is where the creativity was..
i personally think that Chicken Licken like bongi said is something that we've grown up on. Fact is C-L has it's loyal customers and that won't change. what people fail to understand is that because you don't see a brand doesn't mean that it's not doing well. it may be the persoanlity type of the brand. Quite, not sure, breaking out of its skin (excuse the pun) etc. It would be an interesting execise to match a brand's personality with it's consumers!!!
I hear there is one in Cape Town (but where?). Chicken Licken is the only thing I miss about Johannesburg. Personally I love their ads - and I think they need to keep going with the iconic afro look. Maybe one or two high profile outlets would not hurt either.
