I'm flabbergasted that anyone - particularly the audience of this particular newsletter - can even entertain the idea of the SABC (or any other 'real time' media owner for that matter) not having ALL the tools available to them to ensure remaining in full communicado with the public at large, at ALL times.

Does nobody else see this as the ultimate censorship - and self-imposed at that?

At the time of writing this, the author was the ONLY person to vote in favor of the SABC not having Load Shedding imposed on them.

Should they not be exempt from load shedding as well?


I think life saving emergency surgery/ treatment is a lot more important than, catching the latest soapie episode or SABC movie reruns!

I have to say that airports ... hospitals and houses with babies in them are more of an essential service than the SABC. I understand that there are many television addicts out there ... but I for one would be completely disgruntled if they got preferential service.

what about all the other media companies who get load shedding? i am sure they are all dealing with power cuts, and have to fork out millions for generators etc...can SABC not plan ahead?
i am sure some people think that getting the daily newspaper or listening to their favorite non sabc radio stations is equally important as SABC is.

Its not like they are doing anything great for the country. If they get it I want it as well, do they lack planning just like their friends Eskom. Ag sis man!

they get to keep their lights on but hospitals cant, what is this country coming to. if our lights are off we cant tune in to their borring channels anymway.

Surely they can afford to buy a massive generator for the ESSENTIAL departments that need to keep running 24/7!?

The news bureau and all radio stations should be exempt. The broadcast of tv during the day (soapies etc) is of no interest to me! As long as they can stay up to date and issue 1 sensible news broadcast a day - which is more than they do now anyway...

Just how 'essential a service is it if during loadshedding, nobody can actually watch it or tune in? I fail to understand the logic...

What I find incredible is that we are no longer discussing load shedding as a priciple, but rather who should or should not be affected. The ineptitude of the government's response to the various papers and research put before it, and its inability to act are fundamental issues underlying this crises. In conjunction with this, is Eskom's failure to adress urgent maintenance, and or institute disaster recovery plans. The fact that obvious and essential issues were ignored, or passed over in favour of more personally lucrative matters, is a massive cause for concern! It sheds light on our governments decision making prowess!!!

Life saving is very basic & essential: we cannot afford load shedding in our hospitals, clinics etc...
Economic Activities: Government should allow tax rebates and other incentives for those 'big/industrial generators'to be imported easily into the country and make it cheaper to purchase them through some form of rebates! As the load shedding is definitely killing our economy!
Broadicasting: I do not think this matters - if & when we can watch TV, it's nice. But for me what is more important is a robbot that works down the road, I want to be able to give my son a warm plate of food - and I need to keep my job so I can continue putting that plate of food on the table.

I fully agree with Eskom on its decision to keep SABC off the dark. The SABC certainly does offer an essential service. I think many other institutions should be exempted from Load Shedding, the likes of the DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS, the SABC is of no more important than Home Affairs in any way. By the way - does the SABC contribute to the economy of the country in a way? would the country stand a loss if SABC would have no power for a few hours like the rest of our companies?

SABC makes 1,2 million Rands between 8pm and 8:30 pm, on that note, they should buy generators and sponsor some to my company...lol
