I saw the film in its one week pre-oscar screening, and I think it is possibly the finest film ever to come out of this country.

devastating screen explosion by guy willoughby

I saw the press preview on Jan 25 in Cape town and was blown away by an experience harrowing yet uplifting - in the most tortuous and complex way. The Ttotsi character is the real chicken of years and years of neglect come howm to roost, a cold slap of no-comfort to our powers-that-be - and an extraordinary reminder, if any were needed, of the astonishing universality-in-topicality of that master, Athol Fugard. A devastating achievement from Gavin Hood - he has won the Oscar of the human heart.
