COMMUNICATE feedback…Comments streamed in following on the launch of COMMUNICATE last month in a joint venture between Biz-community.com and Editor, Louise Marsland. The overwhelming response from the industry so far is that an independent, professional media for public relations practitioners/communications professionals is long overdue.[15 Jul 09:33] Perception vs realityAs a young journo starting out 17 years ago on a daily newspaper, my news editor used to joke about 'File 13' into which most press releases were dropped: the dustbin. PROs were regarded and described as the bottom feeders of the communications world, quite openly by the senior journalists who were my mentors, who had a contemptuous disregard for the industry, although they all went on the lavish press junkets and went home with the gifts.Comments [1] [15 Jul 09:33] One voice, one profession…In a wide ranging interview with the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), to clarify issues raised by the industry and put certain regulatory initiatives into perspective, Communicate Editor, Louise Marsland, presents an edited version of the Q & A with Margaret Moscardi, PRISA executive director. Seugnet van Niekerk, in charge of PRISA education, was interviewed regarding training.Comments [1] [15 Jul 09:33] The Law of PublicityThe birth of a brand is usually accomplished with publicity, not advertising, according to marketing guru's Al and Laura Ries. This is a rule that marketers would do well to remember.[15 Jul 09:33] Power PRDo you really know what the media want? Does your client really know what constitutes good PR? Louise Marsland listened to Chris Gibbons singing (yes, really!) for his breakfast recently on the topic of The Power of PR. That indomitable media man, Chris Gibbons, was at his best at a breakfast hosted by the proactive Protactic team, earlier this month.Comments [1] [15 Jul 09:33] A lesson in crisis communicationThe Pick 'n Pay story is a textbook study in crisis communication and every company's nightmare. This case of bio-terrorism will no doubt be analysed and dissected ad infinitum in the future.Comments [2] [15 Jul 09:33] Brand management vs PRPublic relations is evolving. There are new agencies emerging which go beyond traditional PR, taking the best from other communications disciplines to present client with a holistic overview of the management of their brands.Comments [3] [15 Jul 09:33] Patterns and pathwaysThe SAtoZ Research has devised a 'Patterns & Pathways" presentation to explore some of the fascinating facts that are emerging on the South African market and the consumer. The presentation has recently been updated to include data on all 10 LSM categories.[15 Jul 09:33] 702 keeps an ear to the ground702 Talk Radio reinforces its message on election day with some creative campaigning of its own! Gauteng's 702 Talk Radio gets our vote for creativity! A couple of days prior to election day, the radio station put up its own 'election posters' advertising its blanket live coverage of the historic 2004 elections signaling South Africa's 10 years of democracy. Then on Tuesday, the day before election day - to reinforce its election message of an "Eye on Election 2004" - the radio station delivered a hamper to media and key clients consisting of a can of Red Bull energy drink, pronouncing: "The only bull you'll get from 702 this Election".On election day, listeners woke up to eyewitness accounts from voters at polling stations around the province and indeed further afield, setting the scene for comprehensive coverage of the largely peaceful poll day.Post elections, 702 will continue with wall-to-wall coverage, 24 hours a day, to bring the results and updates to listeners.Comments [1] [15 Jul 09:33] Ken Oosterbroek – a retrospective exhibitionA retrospective on the work of photographer Ken Oosterbroek opened on the 10 year anniversary of his death, at the PhotoZa gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg, this week. Ken Oosterbroek, the Chief Photographer of The Star, was killed on 18 April 1994 in bloody pre-election fighting in Thokoza township on the East Rand, just two weeks before South Africans went to the polls in South Africa's first historic democratic elections. It was a bittersweet time for all of us who worked at The Star on the elections at the time.Comments [1] [15 Jul 09:33] | ProfileLouise Marsland is editor and editorial director of Bizcommunity.com, Africa’s leading provider of daily media, marketing, and advertising news and information.
