Safety training for human rights reporting

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) is planning to hold a series of workshops titled: "Training sessions for journalists and human rights activists on how to work on the Internet".

The workshop aims to provide journalists and human rights activists with safety guidelines for writing Internet articles to launch campaigns for the freedom of expression and press.

Workshop goals:
  • Improving Internet usage skills
  • Improving the trainees' skills in the field of Internet press
  • Developing the trainees' press writing skills to conform with human rights' principles
  • Encouraging journalists and human rights activists to use the Internet in an attempt to promote press liberty and freedom of expression
  • Forming links between youth journalists and human rights activists

    The workshop's activities intend to open more areas for covering serious political and human rights' events. In addition, it should improve journalists' Internet writing skills and HRinfo will enable trainees to publish their own articles on its website, HRinfo, and related site The Arabic Initiative for a Free Internet.

    Practical subjects:
  • Safe Internet usage
  • Active search tools on the Internet
  • Internet press and respecting human rights' principles in Web writing
  • Using the Internet as a tool to spread press liberty and freedom of expression

    The program is to be held once a month, with dates to be announced. In order to select the journalists and activists who want to join the training, HRinfo will send an invitation to the parties interested in participating. The maximum number of delegates for each workshop is 15 and it is preferable to register early to guarantee a place.

    Registration rules:
  • Participants must be journalists in a print or Internet media institution
  • Participants must be human rights activists participating in human rights' movement
  • Delegates must present a brief resume
  • Identify the name of the media institution or the human rights organisation the participant is working for
  • Means of communication of the participants
  • Internet literacy
  • Attendance of all the training sessions and the writing of at least two articles to bring to HRinfo

    Background
    HRinfo is a legal organisation defending the freedom of opinion, expression and press, and the right to exchange information. Moreover, it works on collecting the publications of 18 Arabic human rights organisations in North Africa and the Middle East, and presenting these on one website. It also provides human rights' sources for media workers, journalists, activists and the public, in an attempt to increase the interest in human rights issues and the number of Internet users in the Arab-speaking world.
