Botswana recalls Chinese dairy products

The Botswana authorities have become the latest of a number of governments around the world to recall Chinese-made dairy products, following the melamine scare.

Melamine, a chemical used to make plastics has been found in Chinese milk based infant formula and other products including candies, puffed rice rolls, flavoured milks, cakes, 3-in-1 instant coffees and potato crackers in several countries.

Botswana's Ministry of Health has cautioned that melamine can cause kidney stones and other complications if ingested. “To date tens of thousands of Chinese children have sought medical care and four have died because of consuming infant formula contaminated with melamine,” said Dr K.C.S. Malefho, the Director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health.
