Zambia appeals for e-education support
By: Gervais J. Henrie

A senior Zambian education ministry official has appealed for support in his country's mammoth task of integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in its educational system.

Moses Mwale says the country's 2030 vision is aimed at promoting ICTs for educational purposes by digitising all schools materials and getting all schools online.

In a presentation titled Linking Education: Experiences with National ICT Programmes for Education, Mwale explained that so far the Zambian government is spending 3% of the national budget to computerise all schools.

An estimated 10% of all Zambian schools will be computerized during the next three years under the programme.

"I have come here to appeal and encourage donors who can come help us raise that number to a more reasonable level. We are aware that this is a mammoth task. But it is something that has to be done. Partnership can be the way forward," explained Mwale.

The Zambian experience was one of three presentations on community and national level initiatives which adopt ICT in education to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The session aimed to find common ground between national ICT policy and ICT in education programmes to scale up the positive impact of these programmes.
