USB Executive Development Ltd of the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB), in conjunction with Stellenbosch University's Centre for Chinese Studies, is launching a new, structured executive learning programme called “Passport to China”. This is in response to China's increasing global presence and rapid economic expansion that have created considerable business interest in the world's most populous nation.
Business opportunities abound in China, yet many South African companies run the risk of missing the boat through a lack of knowledge and know-how to engage effectively with their Chinese counterparts. The programme will provide foundational knowledge, analytical insights and relationship skills to equip participants for doing business with China. The overall aim is to give participants a solid basis from which to expand their knowledge of the country and how to engage with this global actor.
The first component of the programme, a five-day lecture series at the USB in Bellville in August 2008, will provide a detailed overview of China's current political, economic and business environment. Among the topics to be covered are China's foreign policy in Africa and its strategic commercial engagement with this continent. Participants will also be familiarised with Chinese culture and history as well as social and business etiquette. This includes a basic introduction to the Mandarin language.
Although optional, the second component is undoubtedly the highlight of the programme. Participants will undertake a learning trip to Beijing and Hong Kong in October 2008 to gain first-hand experience of China and business practices in the Asian market. The itinerary includes visits to Chinese multinationals and South African companies in China as well as cultural and historic sites.
The programme is ideally suited for business leaders, executives, senior managers and international managers who want to advance their knowledge and skills from an inside perspective on the fascinating growth story of China and the business opportunities in that country.
