Boost for football
By: Walter Wafula

Footballers participating Uganda's local challenge, the Super League, received a financial boost from Gateway Television (GTV), when its founder disbursed UGX306 million to the Federation Ugandan Football Association (FUFA). Each club in the Super league will receive UGX17 million.

The money comes thanks to a historic signing made between GTV and FUFA last year to improve local football and grant GTV the right to broadcast all national and Super League games exclusively.

During the signing, McIntyre pledged to provide financial support to football in Uganda to a tune of $5 million. “We made a long-term commitment to develop a professional league in Uganda and results are already showing,” McIntyre said while handing over the UGX306 million cheque to FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa in Kampala, on February 12.

The funding levels the playing field for all the teams by offering all participating clubs financial support.

Besides extending the support to Uganda, the company has also signed similar financial deals with CECAFA, the Tanzania Premier League, and Ghana Premier League in a bid to boost the quality of African football. According to McIntyre, the move is also in bid to provide an avenue for exposure of many African footballers to international clubs in Europe and elsewhere.
