East African brands join family of international Superbrands
Issued by: MGN Publishing

A host of brands operating in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have been identified by a voluntary independent panel of experts in the marketing and communications fields in East Africa. The brands participating in the programme range from local home grown brands through to worldwide global giants like Toyota, Mercedes Benz, Pirelli, Shell, Smirnoff and Weetabix.

South African brands, including Vodacom, MTN and Old Mutual have also achieved Superbrands status in the region.

Superbrands East Africa Volume One was unveiled at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi at an exciting Tribute Event with a true “African flavour” on the 14th August 2008.

The book takes us on a fascinating journey of how many of the strongest brands operating in East Africa - both local and international have staked their claim in their respective markets, providing a valuable and sometimes surprising insight into what it takes to develop a brand into a Superbrand.

The case studies enclosed in the book reinforce the importance of branded goods and services, and is testament to how the guardians of these brands have overcome a wide variety of barriers in order to take their brand to the next level.

Superbrands is the world's leading arbiter of brands and currently operates in over 80 countries worldwide.

In sub-Saharan Africa, we have seen the Superbrands footprint grow quickly, from its inaugural project in South Africa in 2005 to East Africa and Nigeria's inaugural volumes this year. Further growth is expected for the coming years.

Says CEO Simon Goddard of Superbrands South Africa, “Much has been written about the so-called 'African Renaissance', and we believe the rapid, successful growth of Superbrands in these regions reflects the strength and vitality of the brands operating here - these brands are the pillars of a growing economy."

Superbrands South Africa is currently publishing its third edition of Superbrands as part of the 2008/2009 project.

Superbrand status is awarded by an independent Superbrands Council. Different councils exist for the different geographical regions to ensure that only the most deserving of brands attain the credential. Only brands that are scored highly by the panel qualify for the status and to be featured in the publication.
