Zambia slams SA media: The President is not dead

NEWSWATCH: In a report issued by Sapa/I-Net Bridge, Zambia's country chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, has hit out at South African media for stoking rumours that President Levy Mwanawasa is dead.

This comes after Talk Radio 702 on Thursday announced the death of President Mwanawasa. This was followed up with similar stories in South African national papers; the Star newspaper's afternoon front page was headlined "Stroke kills Zambian president". These accounts have now been removed from Independent Newspapers' online editions.

In the Sapa/I-Net Bridge report, Mulongoti said that President Mwanawasa is alive and in a stable condition at a hospital in Paris, France. He appealed to SA media to restrain such falsified coverage as its causing much stress to the people of Zambia.
