Grant De Sousa’s “Tik” Vuka! ad voted year’s top commercial by Y&R EMEA
Issued by: Collective

Collective Energy director Grant De Sousa has started the year on a high by earning himself a highly sought-after accolade from Young & Rubicam Europe, Middle East & Africa.

Originally produced for the 2006 Vuka! Awards, Grant, along with creatives, Emily Veitch, Deanne Longmore and Tyler Botha of Y&R Cape Town, shot a moving and hard-hitting portrayal of a girl’s downward spiral into a world of drugs entitled “There’s no going back”.

After receiving numerous awards and mentions at the Vuka! Awards, including a win for Best Editing, a special mention for cinematography and a top-3 place for Best Direction, Y&R Cape Town submitted this as their showcase commercial to Y&R EMEA for the renowned Y&R Works showreel.

After a rigorous and strict judging process, based on criteria used by Cannes juries, 10 of Y&R’s top Creative Directors worldwide judged “There’s no going back” as Top TV commercial submitted by all Y&R agencies in the entire Europe, Middle East and Africa network. The commercial has also been added to Y&R’s international show reel which is used as a new business tool by approximately 20 agencies throughout the region.

Says Adrian Holmes, Executive Creative Director of Y&R EMEA: “Here’s a great idea that’s been really well delivered by the director. The gruesome portrayal of a girl’s descent into the world of drug addiction is made all the stronger by being told backwards. The whole thing is driven along by a terrific piece of music, too.”

Grant De Sousa adds, “This proves that South Africa can deliver hard-hitting creative ideas as well as top-end directorial talent on par with, if not better than our international counterparts and I plan to continue this trend.”

Everyone at Collective Energy is thrilled for Grant and look forward to producing some more explosive work in the near future.
