Chinese investors visit Malawi

A 46-strong Chinese delegation is visiting Malawi from May 13, 2008 to May 16 to explore investment opportunities in the southern African state.

The Chinese delegation which is led by the Chinese deputy Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng also intends to enhance trade ties between the two countries

Malawi's Industry and Trade Minister Henry Mussa said the delegation would like to hold discussions with the business community as well as government officials.

While in Malawi the Chinese will exploring possibilities of investing in agro-processing, tea, tobacco, civil work construction of ports, roads and bridges, power, mining, telecommunications, financial services, machinery and aircraft production.

President Bingu wa Mutharika recently visited China which signed diplomatic relationship with Malawi last December where among other benefits, brought with him K40bn in grants that will be used to implement various development projects.

Mussa who accompanied Mutharika to China promised the business community that a number of Chinese investors would be visiting Malawi.

China's economy is currently among the world's top three, with about US$1.3 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves.
