Tyco to run marine survey

Herakles Telecom has awarded the Sea Cable System (SEACOM) marine survey to Tyco Telecommunications, a business unit of Tyco Electronics. The 13,000km marine survey commences the development of the undersea fibre-optic network which will provide high capacity bandwidth connectivity between South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, India and Europe.

SEACOM will complement communication carriers of Southern and East Africa through the sale of wholesale international capacity to global networks eastward through India and westward through the Mediterranean. The system will provide African retail carriers with equal and open access to inexpensive bandwidth, removing the international infrastructure bottleneck and supporting East and Southern African economic growth. SEACOM intends to design, construct, own and operate a privately funded submarine fibre-optic cable system.

“East and South African user demand for international bandwidth, whether for business, institution or individual use, has greatly surpassed the existing supply,” explains Brian Herlihy, vice president, Herakles Telecom, LLC. “SEACOM, as an international submarine cable system, will provide significant supply at affordable prices. The system will deliver infrastructure support for the growth of the information and communication technology sector, in particular business process outsourcing, call centre, pharmaceutical research industries and education networks.”

“Our teams have mobilized the marine assets, and survey operations are underway,” explains Michael Rieger, Tyco Telecommunications' vice president of sales, marketing and project management. “Tyco Telecommunications is proud to be associated with the first major submarine cable infrastructure system linking the countries in East Africa. The SEACOM design will facilitate reliable global connectivity to all regions of the world.”
