Cape Town was a flutter with mamas, papas and babas at the CTICC at the end of July. The economic downturn was certainly not evident in the visible spend happening at SABC Education Baba Indaba.
Clearly mums and dads were keen to spend on their children or expectant babies. Baby slings, furniture, educational software and books as well as children's jewellery were popular items, and the essentials for pregnancy were as much in demand. The 34 846 of visitors who had braved the rain and the cold to visit Baba Indaba were highly impressed and very receptive of the high caliber of exhibitors and products on display. Once again Kagiso Exhibitions and Events Solutions were instrumental in ensuring that all the exhibition stands were perfectly erected on time and the Cape Town International Convention Centre team was superb in their attention to detail. Obviously one plans an expo to go as smoothly as possible, but it's always far easier when the suppliers and venue live up to the same expectations, says Natalie Naude, Show Director.
Exhibitors were extremely complimentary of the organisers as well as the Baba Indaba all round. The very highly visible marketing drive ensured that visitors were aware of the happenings in the city. The extensive television coverage by the SABC has been instrumental in giving Baba Indaba maximum national exposure. Baba Indaba is referred to as a much-anticipated annual event by parents and parents-to-be, thanks to our title sponsor SABC Education, says Alice from S & A Marketing.
The Baby Company sponsored the Speakers' Corner and brought very informed speakers to the visitors. The ADHD support group from Houtbay was instrumental in providing the “top guns” in the industry, assisting parents with questions and concerns they may have with the issue surrounding ADHD. Netcells were very informative about banking our babies' stem cells and Dr Yvonne Holt readily shared the information, which many new parents were not aware of.
Debra Herd from Fit Pregnancy and Michelle Polley from Die Burger, were the external judges of the Best Exhibition Stands. Winners in the various categories were:
Platinum - Nuk Gold - Huggies Silver - The Baby Company
And the Platinum Certificates of Excellence were awarded to: Lily & Jack, Feelgood Health, Hammond Kids, Sony and Gymboree.
Leesa (Hammond Kids), Dayle & Madelyn Richards, Jacques (Hammond Kids)
Hammond Kids had also supplied a beautiful nursery to be won, to the value of R4000 to the Red Cross Children's Hospital Trust on entering a competition and donating to this very worthwhile cause. The lucky winners were Dayle and Madelyn Richards.
