In the six years since it was launched, the National Boat Show has established itself as one of Joburg's out-and-out favourite expos, and not just among the converted either!
Show organiser, Biz Events, actively works to help the sailing and boating industries grow their markets, with interventions that go beyond mere show promotion. These actions, coupled with the amazing exhibits and tireless efforts of its more than 200 exhibitors, have won over countless new recruits to sailing and boating in general.
Now, more than 30 000 visitors attend the expo annually, coming from all over to ogle displays spanning 24 000m2 of exhibition space.
The show runs from 15 - 17 August 2008, at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northriding, and promises to live up to its reputation as an ‘eat-as-much-as-you-like buffet' for sailing, boating and watersports fans.
Sailing is at the heart of the National Boat Show and nobody knows this better than the show's sailing-junkie visitors, except perhaps for the Ocean Sailing Academy (OSA) and Sunsail. These two companies are among the sailing exhibitors who have secured prime space at the show, giving the sailing fraternity something to look forward to yet again.
Andy Dove, of OSA comments: “In addition to our traditional courses, new powerboat courses and other offerings, we've gone into the super yachting industry in a very big way. This industry is huge and growing, and so are our new career courses in super yachting. These include rated and unrated deck hand courses as well as stewardess training on the etiquette and hospitality side of the business. So far, we've been able to place everyone whom we've trained in this new line, via our new crew placement agency, Ocean Crew Placements.
“Working aboard super yachts is an incredible opportunity for youngsters who want to earn dollars and see the world, with the added bonus of free food and accommodation! Our super yacht courses and Ocean Crew will be the focus of our exhibit at the show, but we will of course also provide visitors with information on our traditional courses, the Bavaria Yachts and Cranchi powerboats that we are dealers for, as well as on our fractional boat ownership opportunities. We're looking forward to it!”
Sunsail offer courses from basic introduction to sailing, to Yachtmaster career courses. Sunsail also offer a wide range of yachts in the world's most desirable sailing destinations within their flexible range of purchase and management programmes to either invest in or to charter and have a sailing holiday.
Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans will be displaying their range of yachts which are manufactured in France and exciting news from the company's Karen van Vreden, is that they will also be displaying an ‘Aventura 23.5' manufactured by Go Catamaran at the National Boat Show, both for which Chris Bonnet is the sole South African distributor.
She adds: “Go Cats (available in either 23.5 or 28.5) are the perfect intermediate sized boats for people who want to upgrade from smaller day sailor cats to one with a galley and sleeping quarters, but can't afford to spend a couple of million Rands in the process. Best of all, these cats are trailable, which means you can transport them from one port to another, via trailer. The Aventura 23.5, which we'll be displaying on our stand, can sleep four people, comfortably accommodating six in its cockpit and has a galley.”
