Dennis Pather is seeking early retirement as editor of the Daily News. The company has signalled its wish to retain his expertise and experience in another capacity. Pather, who has been with Independent Newspapers and edited several titles, is a Nieman Fellow.

Alan Dunn, editor of the Sunday Tribune, will replace Pather as editor of the Daily News. He is the senior editor at Independent KZN and also a member of the group editorial leadership tasked with growing its 16 daily and weekly titles in terms of circulation, readership and influence.

Philani Mgwaba, deputy editor of the Sunday Tribune, will become editor of that title. He was the launch editor of Isolezwe and Isolezwe ngeSonto and also edited the Pretoria News.

Independent's CEO Tony Howard said the appointment of Mgwaba and Dunn were designed to provide a fresh impetus to the company's efforts to provide high quality newspapers to readers in one of the most dynamic and exciting regions in the country.

"Alan Dunn is one of our most senior editors and ideally suited to take the Daily News to greater heights. His previous editorship of the daily Pretoria News will serve him well on his new title.

"Philani is one of the rising stars of South African journalism and has all the skills and qualities to entrench and grow the Tribune as the biggest Sunday paper in KwaZulu-Natal."

Howard thanked Pather for his outstanding service to South African journalism and his dedication and contribution to Independent over more than three decades.

"Independent Newspapers is very fortunate indeed to have the depth of experience amongst its editors in KZN to make these appointments without losing any real focus or continuity on any of the affected titles. Each of the new appointees have the required experience to successfully build and enhance their new titles - and to keep Dennis Pather's experience for a while longer will be an added benefit to the whole group," said Howard.
