Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag is justifiably pleased with its first AMPS 2007 B6 information, with readership topping 215 000. Predominantly consumed in the Western Cape and Gauteng, the newspaper's statistics show an excellent split between white and coloured readers, broadly 53% and 41% respectively.
“We are strong in metropolitan areas (53.5%) and large towns or cities (46%), and a lifestage dominance of ‘at homes' - singles, young parents, golden nests, and both mature and new parents purchasing and consuming Sondag make up approximately 70% of our readers,” says CEO of RCP Media Lucille van Niekerk.
It is apparent from the Household Income data that Sondag's readers are an affluent group of upmarket consumers - the average income is R12 782 per month, with over 36 000 readers earning between R10 000 and R15 999 making up almost 17% of the reader's income, and 50 000, or 23% of our readers earn in excess of R16 000 monthly Household Income.
Over 68 000 of Sondag's readers are between the ages of 35 and 49, and 64 000 are over the age of 50.
“We are pleased to offer our media agencies and marketing industry an advertising platform that delivers high income purchasers of goods across all sectors, particularly as the economy faces a challenging time,” says Lucille.
The majority of Sondag's readership is Afrikaans speakers (85%), but English is 8.8% and black language readers total almost 6% of the total base with Tswana being the largest (5 000 readers). The paper also boasts a growing black readership with a current base of 12 000 readers.
