The Mail & Guardian’s ABC figure has grown to an average of 48 291 copies sold per week. “This is 5 188 copies more than our previous ABC period and 6 568 copies (15.7%) up on the same period of 2005,” reported the circulation manager of the Mail & Guardian, Dickon Jayes.
This has been achieved through the acquisition of our own distribution company (Media Distribution Africa, formerly called Central Media Distributors). We reported last year that in just over 100 days, the changes were already visible: The Mail & Guardian is now distributed to more than 3 500 shops throughout South Africa. The best 3 500 shops were targeted, thus reducing wastage (copies and mileage). The The Mail & Guardian’s South African retail sales have grown to an average of 36 166 copies per week: an increase of 20.7% on the same period last year.
The The Mail & Guardian has been on the forefront of South Africa’s breaking news stories in 2006. Jason Zeelie (managing director of M&G Media Ltd) said: “The exceptional editorial produced by Ferial Haffajee and her team of award-winning journalists has contributed greatly to the increase of our circulation and the sustained growth of our loyal readers year on year.” Continued marketing of the newspaper through various media has also helped grow awareness of our publication.
“Our SADC and other foreign retail sales are standing at an average of 3 300 copies per week (a very small decline of 3.9% year on year). These figures show that whilst our sales into Africa are healthy, we are far from reliant on these sales,” said Jayes.
Our end-of-year issue for 2006 sold a massive 71 193, copies one of our record sales. The The Mail & Guardian’s objective for 2007 is to reach a milestone of 50 000 copies and beyond.
