Your house, your home: how to keep it pest free
Issued by: Rentokil

The summer season is upon us which means opening up your humble abode to family members and friends. Nobody wants the long-awaited ambiance of cheerful entertainment spoiled by unsightly and irritating pests.

The most common pests that live and breed in and around the house are cockroaches, rodents, ants, flies and fleas. Rentokil looks at a few preventative measures you can apply to everyday living that will minimise the risk of providing a safe haven to these pests.

Aside from being irritating and unsightly, pests pose great threats as they serve as the carriers of a large number of diseases. When you have children or pets in the house, limiting their exposure to these diseases should be priority. “All our pesticides used are from the APL (approved pesticide list); hence these pesticides are environmentally compatible - they are biodegradable and have a very short residual life. Further, the pesticides that we use are more target specific and not broad range; thus effectively eradicating the infestation and not causing secondary poisoning with pets and children. All Rentokil technicians conduct treatment with the utmost stringent Health and Safety measures.”

“The number one rule to remember when dealing with pests, is that prevention is always better than cure,” says industry expert and Rentokil Quality Assurance Manager Mario Pluke. “Applying the principles of pest control, being Exclusion, Restriction, Destruction and Monitoring, are critical.” Mario Pluke advise you to monitor you house for possible sources that contribute to rodent infestations such as food sources. Ensure that your house has proper proofing to restrict entry to food, water and harbourage.

There are a number of commercial products that are available off the shelf from supermarkets and hardware stores. They promise to eradicate your pest infestations. However, experts like Pluke mean that in order to obtain pest free environments, it is necessary to use and integrated approach to pest control. “As professionals, they understand the life cycles, habitats and biology of pests; hence they are able to develop interventions to capitalise on the weakness of the pest and attain complete destruction.”

Bait technology has been an area in pest control that has become highly prioritised. With the pressure to reduce pesticide usage, traps with baits play a vital role. “These baits/traps serve as monitoring devices and should be inspected regularly. Should it be necessary to use pesticides, always contact an expert. Even though it is indicated that DIY pesticides are safe to use by an amateur, this is not necessarily true and using these commercial products may result in injury or even fatality,” Pluke comments.
