A flaming good birthday
By: Tshepiso Seopa

The Dome in Northgate, Johanesburg, was in flames earlier this week when up to 6000 Nandocas (Nandos employees) from all the nine provinces in South Africa gathered for Nando's 20th birthday celebration. All of Nando's resturants were closed for business on the day and no Nando's chicken was made or sold.

The sounds of Mandoza's Nkalakatha and Freshlyground's Do be do be do and lots more kept the audience the audience moving to the beat, with Nando's management team joining in the celebration by ‘dancing like a white guy'.

The programme on Tuesday, 13 November 2007, included speeches from the management team, who thanked all their staff members in their speeches and encouraged them to keep up with all their hard work.

Kevin Utian, Nando's South Africa's MD, said that: “Nando's coming of age and the success that this brand has achieved in South Africa and throughout the world is first and foremost a tribute to our Nandocas, our people who work behind the counters, in front of the grills, at the tables and in the kitchens.”

“Our 20th birthday proves what can be achieved with vision, commitment and a superb product and Nando's management is deeply indebted to every Nandocas who delivers the dream every day despite increased and ever-tougher local and international competition.”

Motivational and inspirational speaker Billy Selekane was also on the lineup of speakers and he encouraged all to work hard and make their dreams come true and ensure that their dreams do not die by giving them momentum.

The Nandocas were also educated about the company's disease management system that helps employees who are HIV positive by providing them with ARVs for free. In less than 10 days, 20 riders will ride from Pretoria to Durban as part of a fundraising campaign to raise funds for staff members who are infected with HIV.
