Do you remember when Joe ‘S'dumo' Mafela made S'Gudi S'Nice a household catchphrase? What about the very colourful television screen test pattern always accompanied by that ‘melodius' “bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep”? If you do, then you're bound to indulge in the massive trivia vault of local broadcasting memories being served up on the brand new trivia game show “Where Were You?” that launched on SABC2 on Friday 29 August at 21:30.
This homegrown game show tests our knowledge of South African pop culture in a comical way. For 30 years South Africans have been watching local television, and in 30 years a host of icons have appeared including the good, the bad, and the ugly of big names in television, music, sport and fashion - these household heroes, names and faces are the stars of “Where Were You?”
SABC 2 approached Grapevine Postcards to conceptualise, design, print and distribute a postcard campaign for them to advertise the launch of this new local television game show.
An important aspect with this game show concept was the importance to reach a certain target market. This was achieved by appealing to the nostalgic side of people by using memorable personalities and events in South African history, going back almost 30 years! This naturally evokes the question “Where where YOU?” when for example Zola Bud ran the Olympics barefoot, or when Riaan Cruywagen first started out as a news anchor at SABC 2?
It is always quite refreshing to reflect back on your childhood memories. Where where you, what where you doing, and how has your outlook to life changed? What made certain years memorable? And even though, especially in South Africa, we all come from a variety of backgrounds, these historical landmarks are the same for all of us, and bring a sense of stability and unity to our history as a people.
