National Geographic scoops Battle of Kruger

The world-famous South African ‘Battle of Kruger' amateur video, that has enjoyed more online views than any other video on the citizen journalism site, YouTube, is now the focus of a documentary by National Geographic that was screened on Nat Geo Wild in the UK yesterday, Sunday, 21 September 2008.

More than 25 million people to date have viewed the breathtaking and epic battle of a herd of buffalo for the life of one of its calves as a pride of lions and a crocodile compete to turn the young animal into prey.

It's become one of the most famous videos of all time. It's captured the imagination of the world and has given fresh evidence that the range of experiences available in South Africa is rivaled by no other destination on earth.

This past Sunday, National Geographic examined the video, giving the story behind the story and including analysis from eyewitnesses and wildlife experts (including the Park's veterinary research manager and a predator-prey behaviour expert). The crew revisited the scene in Kruger National Park to allow amateur videographer, David Budzinski, to recount the heart-stopping 15 minutes that the battle unfolded.

Broadcast dates in other countries are yet to be set. However, the video may be seen on the You Tube website.
