Absa renews Currie Cup sponsorship

Absa has renewed its long-standing sponsorship of South Africa's premier domestic competition, the Absa Currie Cup, for a further five years, SA Rugby revealed earlier this week. Absa CEO Steve Booysen also unveiled a new element to the competition that will be unique in South African rugby.

Absa will sponsor Player and Coach of the Month awards throughout the tournament, culminating in seasonal titles. Players and coaches stand to win R10 000 each per month from July to October.

The fans, too, will have plenty to shout about, with 13 fantastic new CPI formula 125cc scooters, valued at over R10 000 each, up for grabs for those devoted home fans supporting their side on a weekly basis.

Marcel de Klerk, managing executive of the vehicle and asset finance division at Absa, added, “As the specialist vehicle financier within Absa, we will be driving more spectators to the stadiums. In addition, should any customer sign up for vehicle or asset finance with Absa, they will stand a chance to win one of three Seedoo Jetskis or one of three Can Am Quadbikes, which are on offer during the 2008 season, in a joint venture with one of our alliance partners, Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) who distribute these products in SA.”

Great buzz

“There is a great buzz in the country ahead of the 2008 Absa Currie Cup,” said Angie Burton, GM, group marketing at Absa. “There is no doubt that South Africa's World Cup success had plenty to do with this, but we are confident that the Absa Currie Cup will keep rugby firmly in people's minds from June right through until October!

“From a business perspective, the Absa Currie Cup sponsorship creates an opportunity for the rugby public to interact with and experience the Absa brand through various leveraging and marketing activities. It also provides us with an opportunity to engage with a most passionate target market, comprising both existing and potential customers.”

Not only is the Absa Currie Cup steeped in tradition, having first come into being in 1892, but it still remains the competition to win - former Springbok prop Os du Randt having described Free State's win in 2006 as better than World Cup (1995) and Tri-Nations (2004) success.

The Absa Currie Cup kicks off on Friday 20 June, 7.10pm, with Sharks versus Vodacom Western Province at Absa Stadium, Durban.
