In the current difficult consumer economic environment in SA, cost control for media companies is all-important. But consistent marketing becomes even more crucial in recessionary times to ensure long-term brand success. The benefits of advertising during a slowdown will continue to return healthy dividends long after the slump is over.
With these principles in mind the FHM team set out to create a new and uniquely South African television and web campaign for iconic men's lifestyle media brand FHM. The new commercials are based on FHM's award-winning slogan, “It's a guy thing”. Typically men's pursuits are humorously portrayed in the ads.
The first in the series shows a guy who's more interested in a top tennis star's assets than in the score of the game, while other commercials are set in a pub, around the braai and shows guys trying to drink cold drinks while jumping on a trampoline.
In the FHM Tennis commercial Tracy McGregor, FHM Sexiest Woman in SA 2008, stars as the winning player, Miss Ripsakorsetov.
What differentiates this campaign is that it was created, produced, filmed, edited and finalised by the internal FHM team at SA's premier celebrity and entertainment media company, UCM. The commercials were therefore produced at minimal cost. (Extension 40 at the Old Shanghai Firecracker Factory assisted UCM with creative direction and logistics.)
The FHM Tennis television commercial is flighted on MNet, various DStv channels, SuperSport during Wimbledon, as well as on e.tv and the E News Channel.
The new FHM August issue featuring Tracy McGregor is on sale now.
