Wegbreek grows up

Having evolved and undergone refinements over the past 10 months, the May 2007 issue of Wegbreek will have a smaller, more compact format, original content and its own design. The new look signals the final phase of the magazine’s development as it becomes an independent title with its own identity.

Features will be written by its own editorial team and contributors, rather than reworked from the English articles used in Getaway. Only some of Getaway’s columns will be retained.

Wegbreek will lay more emphasis on the written word and less on visual images, allowing readers to savour the language. The strong literary focus is already highlighted by the regular use of short stories and extracts from well-known Afrikaans authors.

“In a sense, Wegbreek is largely a lifestyle magazine with travel as its subject,” explains editor Gerrit Rautenbach. “We see the magazine as a mix of three elements: actual travel, armchair travel and head travel.

“In the first, we provide information about destinations – the where to and how to of travel. In the second, we look at expeditions and events that most readers will not necessarily want to do, but would love to read about; Mike Horn crossing the North Pole, for example. And in the third, we look at the philosophy and the psychology of travel; the journey of life. Here, the focus is on the artistic and literary value of the in-depth writing; an entertaining travel read.”

According to Rautenbach, the Wegbreek audience is well-defined, with readers being educated, intellectual and philosophical and preferring to read articles in their original language rather than in translation.

The May issue of Wegbreek goes on sale on 23 April.
