It's hard to believe, but Operation OUTreach, the charity campaign orchestrated by OUTsurance Insurance and Algoa FM, recently completed its fourth project of the year, the restoration of Walmer High School in Port Elizabeth.
The project's initial goal was to upgrade Walmer High School's hall into a community centre, which would provide the school with a new source of revenue, while also acting as a safe haven for the pupils and the community. However, through the initiative of Builders Warehouse Port Elizabeth, the goal became much greater.
Builders Warehouse undertook to upgrade the entire school, and via Operation OUTreach, members of the public were called upon to donate various educational equipment. Algoa FM also urged listeners to drop off warm clothing and bedding at Builders Warehouse, from where it would be delivered to the school for distribution amongst the community.
Helping South Africa OUT
The Walmer High School project parallels the Helping SA OUT campaign, in which OUTsurance has provided the backing for projects that help out those in need. Whether it is helping Johannesburg street children or supplying food and clothes to infants infected with HIV/AIDS, the Helping SA OUT campaign has touched the lives of many South Africans. OUTsurance chose 24 of their own staff's team projects and then gave each team the backing to put their plan into action.
Under a large fig tree in Illovo on the South Coast, underprivileged and abused women and children meet every Wednesday morning from 9:30 am to 2pm, where they find strength in each other by praying and sharing their experiences. This is where the OUTsurance Insurance team, lead by Nadine Nel, joined them. The women and children were truly grateful for the blankets, clothes and wrought iron bathtubs they received.
For the animals of the Highveld Horse Unit, a non-profit organisation dedicated to monitoring the wellbeing of horses in all respects, help couldn't have come any sooner. As their contribution to Helping SA OUT, Anita Nel and her team harnessed their talents and aided the unit with bridles, halters, brushes and carrots. New tack replaced old and tatty, ill fitting harnesses were replaced with brand spanking new ones.
On Saturday 4 August the members of the Masisukume Sakhe (Arise & Build) team went to the Silversig Home (in Silverton) for the elderly and disabled people whose main source of income is a minimal government pension and who are, for the most part, forgotten by society. Amongst the donations were 10 shower chairs and a wheelchair, as well as six enormous bags of clothes. “It is a moving experience to see how these people appreciate things that we take for granted in our daily lives,” says Gawie Piek, team leader of the Arise & Build project. “Not only was this a life-changing experience for us; it also brought us closer as a team. We're deeply grateful to OUTsurance for enabling us to go out and make such a difference.”
