The emerging black middle class, termed the ‘Onyx Market' by TGI research (and also referred to as the Black Diamonds in marketing parlance), continues to grow, reaching a figure of 3.7 million individuals in 2008.

According to TGI, a comparison in a few selected markets shows how important these wealthy individuals are when compared to whites who were traditionally the prime market… the Onyx are younger (32 years old on average, a full eight years younger than the average white), they outnumber whites in alcohol consumption, Internet usage, and owning a generator. Motor vehicle ownership still lags that of whites.
