South Africa's most trusted companies
Issued by: Ask Afrika

The results of Ask Afrika's Trust Barometer® survey were released at an awards ceremony held at Melrose Arch on Friday, 8th of August 2008. It was attended by various CEOs and executives from major South African corporates.

The Trust Barometer is unique as it is based on the opinions of peers employed by JSE listed companies, rather than public opinion. In total 203 directors at JSE listed companies were interviewed and asked to indicate the three companies they admired most. They were then asked to rate these companies on various reputation and trust dimensions.

Overall winner for 2007 was Standard Bank, followed by SAB and MTN. Overall most reputable CEO was Jacko Maree for the third time. Maree also won in 2004, 2005. Brian Joffe, CEO of Bidvest came second (also winning in 2005).

Respondents' opinions were also collected on black owned and managed companies. Mvelaphanda was selected as the most reputable, followed by African Rainbow Minerals and Kagiso.

An additional government leg was included for 2007, collecting opinions from 103 government officials and 201 members of the public. Government officials rated the National Treasury as overall most reputable. The Department of Trade and Industry followed in second place, with the South African Revenue Services in Third. Trevor Manuel was selected as the most reputable minister by his peers, followed by Naledi Pandor.

In contrast to the ratings of government officials, members of the public placed the South African Revenue Services in first place, followed by the National Treasury and the Department of Housing.
