Net#work babysit Plascon snails

Babysitting snails and making sure they did not leave their slimy trail all over the creative department of Net#work BBDO, was all part of making the new Plascon Wall & All 40 second commercial. After six years of seeing the 'wall washing elephants', there is currently a new version on South Africa's television screens... the humble snail.
From the largest animal to the smallest - the subject is now snails that leave a shiny trail on a wall as they 'ballroom dance' in the moonlight.

However, in the cold light of day, the enchanting nocturnal activity leaves a rather slimy mess - no problem for the sprinklers as the spray washes over the wall with the 'paint that lasts - not the dirt'.

This is the first commercial by Net#work BBDO since Plascon moved its account to the creative agency this year. Says creative team, Asheen Naidu and Marion Bryan: "We wanted to create an ad that was even more charming than 'Elephants' - something that would continue to entertain audiences irrespective of how many times they watched it."

Directing this advert provided quite a challenge for Fresh Eye film director, Jonathan Parkinson, well known for being a perfectionist and a post production guru. He says, "'Snails' is a brilliant concept, but I was covering some unknown ground in executing it." Jokingly, he says: "No snails were harmed in the making of this ad."

This is not surprising, as the graceful, realistic creatures were a combined result of motorised animatronics (mechanically built) snails and very sophisticated computer graphics. He says, "trying to make the end result as realistic as possible, we studied live snails for hours to capture their movement and texture and directing the lengthy post production was a painstaking experience. However, I am really pleased with the result and fortunately so is the client."
