Ontwerp update!
Issued by: Ontwerp

Ontwerp have been busy lately so head on through to our press office to check out a bunch of new projects that we have recently completed.

The latest of which are a fully CG spot for Netdreams London, a cinema spot for the new Sony walkman phone, an exciting collaboration with Sub urban films for the Seat Leon Cupra, animated characters for Twist - who are sponsoring "So you think you can dance", a new Boardmans spot for the Jupiter Drawing Room and finally a new retail spot for Edgars red hanger for the good folks at Fresheye Films.

Be sure to visit our website and check out our brand new winter reel for 2008! If you would like one on DVD please contact us and we will gladly send you one.

SEAT LEON CUPRA

When Sub urban Johannesburg approached us with visual effects requirements for their new Seat Leon Cupra commercial, we were excited to take on a project with such extensive technical requirements.

In the pre-production phase a vast number of tests were done by both Sub urban and ourselves to potentially iron out any problems that might occur in the post production phase and to explore the characteristics of yellow paint traveling through mid-air and colliding with objects at a very high frame rate. Our goal was to achieve absolute realism not only with the motion and characteristics of the paint but also with the look, texturing and lighting of the fluid. During the shoot we took HDRI (High Dynamic Range Image) information to accurately recreate the lighting of the actual set in our 3D environment, all adding to the realistic rendering of the 3D paint.

There were some interesting compositing challenges, too, i.e. in the manhole scene, etc., we basically recreated the environment out of separately shot stills (props and background) while the performance was shot on chroma key (green screen).

In the post production phase many of the work in progress meetings were handled via FTP (file transfer protocol) seeing that most of the agency creative's from BAM were down in Cape Town.

Throughout the whole production we had a lot of valuable input from Mark Fisher as well as Miles Goodall (the Director) from Sub urban, and at the end all who were involved were satisfied with the end results.

TWIST TANG

The animators here at Ontwerp got quite excited when it was time again to pull the TANG characters out of the archive and dust them off for a brand new TANG commercial. This being our fourth installment of the series thus far. Twist will be sponsoring the South African version of “So You Think You Can Dance” and needed a commercial that would tie in with the whole concept. A new creative team at Leo Burnett worked on it with Director Dan Roberts from Terraplane who has directed all the previous TANG commercials. The new commercial will be featuring the TANG characters dancing some very well known and even controversial dances that should provoke some interesting responses.

One fact that we always have to keep in mind when animating these characters is the fact that they do not have any facial features, so the animation of the movements and the use of their whole body must be done very accurately and exaggerated to portray emotions. In order to execute the dance sequences we had to modify the rigs of the characters to make them more flexible for the dance sequences. We utilised secondary animation techniques like squash & stretch and jiggle on their stomachs which all added to the believability of the overall animation and characteristics of their bodies.

Bernie Roux from Lovebomb assisted us on the character development via FTP sessions to New Zealand bringing his unique character expertise to the project.

Most of the animation was done prior to the shoot, and then put on ice until it could be rendered out with the HDRI (High Dynamic Range Image) information captured from the actual set.

Creative input from Director Dan Roberts proved as always invaluable to the project.

SONY ERICSSON

Veering away from the original script can sometimes be a dangerous thing to do when pitching a treatment, but in our case won us the 30-second cinema spot for the new Sony Ericsson W350i. McCann Erickson Worldwide wanted to clearly bring the message across that the music phone is essentially like a jukebox, or latest MP3 player whilst making it attractive to their target market.

We decided to create a contrast between the exterior of the Jukebox that is beautifully illustrated with warm natural patterns, tones, colours and iconography and the inside which is more minimalistic and hi-tech creating an unexpected surprise for the audience when pulling into the inner workings of the jukebox revealing the phones as the source of its music.

For the sound design we turned to Sonos Studios in Cape Town who did a great job considering the timeframe that they had to work in. Overall it was a fun project to be engaged in due to the creative freedom and 2K workflow (Cinema ready).

Working with McCann Worldwide was truly a pleasant experience.

EDGARS RED HANGER SALE

When working on retail ads one must always keep in mind that the product or merchandise should be the main focus in frame. When Director Bevan Cullinan from Fresh Eye called us in he explained that he wanted all of the models shot standing on a red illuminated square (resembling the Edgars red cube) in a black space or void. To complement the live action we added dynamic lighting effects in a subtle combination of 2D and 3D.

In the pre-production phase we proposed that we break down the light effects into three groups namely, The Neon Tube, Fractal Neon Elements and Gaseous Light which would all be introduced into frame at various intervals depending on the model, composition and merchandise on offer.

On the day of principle photography tracking marks on dowel sticks were placed around the models in the black space so that camera movements could be recreated in 3D.

After the offline edit was approved all footage was supplied to us where we started the rotoscoping. To generate mats for the interplay between light and models.

INTERNET DREAMS

The London based company Internet Dreams with whom Ontwerp has a long-standing relationship called upon us to create a fully CGI animated promo for their website. The concept for them was to drive home there victory of reaching number one on Google's SEQ search London manifesting itself visually in a Nascar racing sequence. Particular attention was given to the finer details like small cracks in the road and reflections in the visor. The sound design was created and mixed by Anthony Dart, the Director/Designer and founder of Ontwerp.

Keep an eye on this space to see new collaborative projects between Ontwerp and Internet Dreams.

BOARDMANS WINTER

This is the fourth installment in this series of commercials designed and directed by Ontwerp for The Jupiter Drawing Room, Johannesburg.

With a well established aesthetic from previous versions we created a ‘Winter Themed Atmosphere' for this installment. The commercial tracks a woman returning home from a rewarding shopping spree at Boardmans as we journey through various rooms filled with Boardmans merchandise. The environment is totally computer generated as well as some of the merchandise.
