It's hard to write about someone's passing when you can picture them saying to each attempt: “Nah, that's naff, boss.”
But then Benji would say it shouldn't be easy.
Benji had recently spent much time discussing the nature of creativity, how it was a career not a job, how you were chosen to do this - and it shouldn't be easy. You would fail and you would succeed - but you just had to do the work. You were outside normal society, and the rewards were complex. You had to be true to your instincts and creative principals, you had to “Live by the sword, die by the sword” - like a warrior. He liked this, the warrior thing, because Benji, to all who knew him, was a little fella. But his creative self was hard fought and uncompromising, his chosen battleground. And it fitted.
My last exchange with him was about a job he'd pitched on, (I'd heard it had gone well), he said: “...Hey boss, you know, live by the sword...”
